Filevine integrations for automatic time capture: What law firms should add to their PMS.

Filevine integrations for automatic time capture: What law firms should add to their PMS. See how PointOne captures work across emails, documents, meetings, calls, and other applications, then converts it into compliant time entries for review and release into Filevine. Julia Bodet What Filevine manages within the firm Why work performed outside Filevine can still go unrecorded How PointOne creates and assigns time entries How approved entries move into Filevine Why a PMS migration is the right time to improve timekeeping FAQs about PointOne's integration with Filevine 3 minutes read Sep 23, 2026 AI summary. * Filevine manages a firm's cases, matters, documents, workflows, and billing data. * PointOne captures work performed across email, documents, meetings, calls, browsers, and other applications. * PointOne uses AI to assign activity to matters and generate compliant draft time entries. * Attorneys review and approve their entries before releasing them into Filevine. * A migration from ProLaw or another PMS is a practical opportunity to improve timekeeping alongside the firm's broader workflows. What Filevine manages within the firm. Filevine serves as the operational system of record for legal work. Firms can use it to organize matters and case data, manage documents and workflows, track deadlines, and support timekeeping, billing, invoicing, and payments. That centralization gives attorneys and staff a consistent place to manage the lifecycle of a matter. It also gives the billing team structured client, matter, time, and financial data to work with. PointOne does not replace that foundation. It adds an automatic time-capture and billing-compliance layer around it. Why work performed outside Filevine can still go unrecorded. Even with a modern PMS, attorneys still perform a large share of their work elsewhere. They draft in Word, respond in Outlook or Gmail, attend calls and meetings, review PDFs, conduct research in a browser, and move repeatedly between matters throughout the day. If recording that work depends on starting a timer or reconstructing the day later, some activity can still fall through the cracks. Short emails, quick calls, document revisions, and fragmented research sessions are especially easy to overlook. The problem is not where the matter is managed. It is the gap between performing work and recording it accurately. How PointOne creates and assigns time entries. PointOne captures work across the applications attorneys already use, including emails, documents, calendar events, calls, meetings, and browser activity. It then interprets that activity and creates draft time entries by: * Grouping related work into appropriate entries * Assigning the likely client and matter * Drafting a clear billing narrative * Applying relevant task and activity codes * Checking the entry against firm and client billing guidelines Attorneys can inspect the activity behind an entry, make edits, and confirm that the matter, duration, codes, and narrative are correct. Instead of rebuilding the day from memory, they review work that has already been captured and organized. How approved entries move into Filevine. PointOne provides a direct, firm-level integration with Filevine. Once the connection is configured, PointOne can use the firm's Filevine client and matter data when assigning captured activity. Completed entries remain available for review before release. After approval, they move into Filevine so the firm can continue using its established billing process. The resulting workflow is straightforward: Work happens across the attorney's applications | PointOne captures and converts it into compliant time entries | the attorney or reviewer approves the entries | approved time flows into Filevine. Filevine remains the practice-management and billing system. PointOne helps ensure that more of the work feeding that system is captured, properly assigned, and ready to bill. Why a PMS migration is the right time to improve timekeeping. A migration from ProLaw or another practice-management platform already requires the firm to examine its matter data, workflows, permissions, billing rules, and integrations. That makes it a practical time to address timekeeping as well. Moving existing manual habits into a new PMS may preserve the same missed-time problem. Adding automatic time capture during the transition allows the firm to redesign the workflow around review rather than reconstruction. It also lets the implementation team align client and matter data, user access, billing codes, and approval processes before the new system becomes business as usual. For firms moving to Filevine, the result is a more complete billing workflow: Filevine manages the matters and billing data, while PointOne captures the work completed across the rest of the attorney's day. PointOne adds the automatic time-capture and compliance layer that helps firms get more accurate, review-ready time into Filevine - without asking attorneys to change where they work. When precedent has no citation: Filevine's semantic citator.

When precedent has no citation: Filevine's semantic citator. ByJoseph Andrew, Contributor. Joe Andrew writes about the business of law. Aug 31, 2026, 12:45pm EDT 0:00 / 3:13 Summary. Legal AI pioneer Filevine, led by CEO Ryan Anderson, is set to unveil "semantic shepherdization" on September 1st, a significant advancement for lawyers. This new AI-driven feature, integrated into Filevine's LOIS platform, moves beyond traditional citation-based legal research. Unlike established giants LexisNexis and Westlaw, which track direct citations to verify "good law," Filevine's LOIS identifies semantic similarities in legal reasoning. This allows it to uncover relevant precedents even when not directly cited, potentially revealing "best arguments" that traditional systems miss. Filevine is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the legal tech landscape. Filevine, the fast growing legal AI pioneer, led by the articulate and charismatic Ryan Anderson, once again is showing lawyers the future of AI productivity support. In a move that seasoned lawyers will see as a big deal, Filevine will announce on September first that it is introducing semantic "shepherdization." For readers who are not lawyers, one of the key skill sets of lawyers, particularly litigators, is understanding what is precedent- what have courts decided in the past on a given issue. The history of legal Shepherdizing - the legal research process of verifying whether a court opinion or statute is still "good law," began more than 150 years ago when Frank Shepherd invited the "citator" as a productivity tool for lawyers. What began as a physical practice of tearing and pasting stickers evolved into a multi-million-dollar digital infrastructure- pasting the trademarked term "Shepardizing" into the lexicon of lawyers, while creating fear in the hearts of every young lawyer who has nightmares about "missing a case." The first legal productivity tools. Shepard's moved online in 1980, but it wasn't until LexisNexis acquired Shepard's in 1999 that the research tool's online platform gained the extensive analytical capabilities today's users have come to appreciate. Westlaw, with a slightly larger market share, traces it's roots to 1872, uses a similar tried and true system of legal research that some have found to be more accurate, based on a "Keycite" system. Both Lexis and Westlaw have moved heavily into the AI world with impressive systems. But both still focus on following particular citations through legal systems and legal histories. These two giants in legal tech now have a new competitor. Filevine's LOIS, or "legal operating intelligence system," can find semantic similarities even if a particular case is not cited by another court, focusing on the underlying reasoning rather than on a particular name. As Ryan Anderson told me, "Westlaw and Lexis are blind to your best arguments." Supercharging the search. LOIS, best known for a slick video starring Sarah Rafferty (famous for her role as Donna Paulsen in Suits) as a senior litigator in a promotional short film, integrates directly into case files, documents, calendars, and communications to execute tasks. Now, the system can contextually shepherdize along with its other productivity processes, adding onto, if not replacing, other search tools. Kyle Usner, Associate Attorney, Mass Torts, Insurance Claim HQ, said "For medical records review, LOIS is saving some cases hours. My paralegals and I always click back to verify the source. That's what gives us confidence- it's not making things up." The consequential idea is not semantic legal search by itself. Legal platforms, like Casetext or Paxton, have used natural-language, concept-based, and semantic search for years. Nor is semantic search the opposite of Shepardizing. Semantic search is principally a way to find authority, while Shepard's and KeyCite are principally ways to validate authority after it has been found. CEO: C-suite news, analysis, and advice for top decision makers right to your inbox. Filevine's more ambitious move is to combine the two functions. LOIS starts with the particular passage a lawyer proposes to cite, follows the conventional citation graph, and simultaneously searches for later opinions addressing the same legal proposition even when they use different language and never cite the original case. It then attempts to classify the treatment and produce a source-linked memorandum. Filevine describes this as dual-pathway retrieval: one pathway follows citations; the other follows meaning. Traditional citatory trace what happened to a case. A semantic citator attempts to determine what happened to the legal proposition inside the case. To do both on one platform can be a meaningful advance, assuming Filevine can establish that it works accurately across jurisdictions, courts and areas of law. Suits said it best. Competing directly with some of the largest and best known legal technology providers is not for the faint of art, but Anderson and Filevine have demonstrated that they play to win, adding another element in their walled garden strategy to try to get ecosystem lock in for clients and customers who want to live in Lois's world. The citator function has long been one of the principal reasons firms maintain expensive Westlaw and Lexis subscriptions. A research platform can have an attractive interface and good search, but lawyers will hesitate to depend on it if they cannot reliably determine whether the resulting authorities remain good law. That explains why Paxton and vLex have also invested in citators and why legal-technology observers have described the citator as the "holy grail" for challengers to the major research providers. A viable independent citator could weaken one of the most durable competitive protections in legal publishing. Or, as one of the most famous lines from Suits reminds Innovaision, LLC, "I'm Donna. I know everything." Read its community guidelines. Less than $2/week.

Other AI reads. LOIS runs. 90-day free trial launches.

Other AI reads. LOIS runs. 90-day free trial launches. 19 August, 2026 Jessie Barnhill SALT LAKE CITY - July 21, 2026 - Legal work demands intelligence, not just tools. Filevine has launched a 90-day free trial of the Legal Operating Intelligence System (LOIS). No migration. No switching. No commitment. General-purpose AI creates noise. LOIS delivers outcomes. While standard tools offer limited analysis, LOIS acts as an extension of the legal team. It verifies citations against law, analyzes case files, flags privilege issues, and drafts responses. Built on 40 million matters of structured legal data, LOIS functions not as a passive search engine, but as an active operator. It does the work, so you can make the decision. When lawyers have the clarity to act decisively, justice moves forward. "The practice of law is not the practice of siloed tasks," said Ryan Anderson, CEO and Founder of Filevine. "For ten years we watched lawyers get better tools. Tools do not run firms. Tools do not win cases. We built the AI that does both." Firms can start today. The 90-day trial requires no credit card and allows teams to explore litigation support, transactional diligence, and advisory research in an isolated sandbox. Organizations can request access at filevine.com/lois. About Filevine Filevine is the system of record for the modern law firm. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Filevine connects contracts, matters, documents, and workflows into a unified platform. Thousands of organizations rely on Filevine to manage complex legal work with precision and control.
