Requirements
  • Registration as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and 18 months of sleep laboratory experience, or registration as a Registered Sleep Technologist through the American Board of Sleep Medicine and 18 months of sleep laboratory experience, or respiratory therapist licensure required by the state where services are provided and one year of respiratory therapist experience.
  • A respiratory therapist must hold one of the following National Board for Respiratory Care certifications: Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist, Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist, Certified Respiratory Therapist, Registered Respiratory Therapist, or Registered Sleep Disorder Specialist.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of the hire date.
  • Be able to lift, push, or pull at least 40 pounds.
  • Be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Be flexible to work during unscheduled hours.
  • Have good verbal and written skills.
  • Be able to communicate appropriately with physicians, staff, and patients.
Responsibilities
  • Complete patient testing procedures at the Sleep Center and in the hospital while ensuring high-quality and efficient studies.
  • Ensure proper documentation in the Tech Notes, acquisition equipment, and patient chart.
  • Perform sleep studies according to Sleep Evaluation Center policies and procedures at the bedside and in critical care areas of the hospital.
  • Prepare initial data for physician use in formulating sleep reports according to department guidelines.
  • Use the AIDET Communications Process and inform patients and families about the nature and significance of the study performed.
  • Accurately observe, record, and timely report patient concerns, symptoms, and reactions.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development across the life span to assess patient data, identify age-specific requirements, and provide care according to department policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the orderliness and cleanliness of equipment, procedure rooms, and work areas of the Sleep Evaluation Center.
  • Maintain continuing education unit requirements and participate in department education and in-services.
  • Assist with instruction and hands-on technical training of trainees, house staff, and medical staff inside and outside the institution.
  • Participate in work-unit and department goals and objectives by assisting co-workers, contributing ideas, and solving problems with co-workers.
  • Score sleep studies according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in an allied health field or graduation from a respiratory therapy program.
  • A respiratory license.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
  • One to two years of sleep laboratory experience as a respiratory therapist.
  • Hospital patient-care work experience.
