Requirements
  • Must be entering the final semester or year of an accredited Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate registered nursing program.
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push or pull heavy loads.
  • Must possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity, along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the registered nurse in professional nursing practice by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures outlined in the nursing care plan.
  • Assist the registered nurse with patients’ activities of daily living according to patient needs, in a timely manner and following departmental procedure.
  • Perform designated procedures as needed, following departmental procedure.
  • Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the registered nurse in a timely manner.
  • Assist the registered nurse with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified and validated by a nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, or nurse director; assist the registered nurse with procedures defined by the advanced skills inventory where applicable.
  • Demonstrate competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out independently, where applicable.
  • Demonstrate competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out under direct registered nurse supervision, where applicable.
  • Educate oneself effectively, assist in peer education, and seek educational opportunities to increase competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable.
  • Assist the registered nurse with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent or control infections and ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedure.
  • Thoroughly clean assigned unit equipment according to schedule or need, and keep hallways and work areas free of equipment according to departmental procedure.
  • May act as a sitter for a patient when assigned by the charge registered nurse.
  • May have limited access to medication, including transporting non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.
