Requirements
  • The student must have coursework in the discipline requested on the task-order Statement of Work.
  • Undergraduate Student 2 candidates must be at the junior or senior level, have experience in 50% of the task requirements, and be able to accomplish 50% of the work independently.
  • Undergraduate Student 3 candidates must be at the senior level, have experience in 100% of the task requirements, and be able to accomplish 90% of the work independently.
  • Preferred relevant majors include Computer Science and Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics; other relevant majors may be considered with relevant coursework or work experience.
  • Only United States citizens may qualify due to Department of Defense regulations.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret security clearance, contingent upon satisfactory background-check results.
  • The employee must reside in California and live within commuting distance of San Diego State University at the time of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provide Communication Systems Operations Support, including operating Type 1 encrypted military narrowband radios such as AN/PRC-163 and AN/PRC-117G and managing COMSEC protocols during laboratory experimentation.
  • Assist with Systems Integration and Payload Support, including implementing Software-Defined Radios, MANET radios, and live-streaming sensors for signal characterization and relay.
  • Operate and navigate Unmanned Surface Vehicle platforms in support of naval laboratory exercises.
  • Provide Software Development and Automation Support by developing software and scripts to automate tactical radio transmissions.
  • Provide Cybersecurity and Compliance Support by using STIG Viewer to assess, implement, and validate system security controls and ensure secure network configuration.
  • Design and assist in developing training lectures focused on tactical radio and satellite communications, and conduct analytical studies to validate and refine lecture materials.
  • Execute system simulations to evaluate SATCOM constraints and operational scenarios, and conduct studies to characterize the operational behavior and limitations of radio cross-banding equipment.
  • Provide engineering support under the close supervision and guidance of experienced engineering and scientific professionals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Documented COMSEC training and qualification to operate Type 1 cryptographic devices.
  • Proven hands-on experience with tactical military radios, Software-Defined Radios (SDR), and SATCOM.
  • Proficiency in software development for automated testing of asymmetric data transmission, including configuring radios for transmit-only or receive-only operations.
  • Demonstrated experience applying Department of War Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Ability to design and execute system simulations, conduct field studies to validate communications architectures, and translate technical findings into comprehensive training documents.
