Requirements
  • Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration is required.
  • Current licensure is required through the applicable state board where services will be provided: West Virginia, Maryland, or Ohio.
  • A state criminal background check and federal background check, if applicable, are required for regulated areas.
  • The role requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction, are required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • The role requires organizing work and responding to changes in work volume throughout the shift.
  • The employee must be able to work Saturdays and some holidays and may occasionally attend an evening meeting.
  • The role requires interaction with coworkers, patients, families, and other medical team members.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive medical nutrition therapy to patients.
  • Complete physician-ordered consultations and instructions according to standards of care, document them in the medical record, and contact physicians about concerns and recommendations.
  • Document NPO and clear-liquid notes by day five and follow up until nutrition is provided unless contraindicated.
  • Complete and document calorie counts accurately and document a calorie-count summary within 24 hours when results warrant nutritional recommendations.
  • Calculate and report nitrogen-balance and metabolic-cart study results accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete and document nutrition assessments for high-risk patients, including diet appropriateness, tube feeding, infant formula, parenteral nutrition, laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, medical history, nutritional needs, nutrition education needs, care-plan development, and electronic medical-record orders when intervention is needed.
  • Use registered and licensed dietitian order-writing privileges, with physician co-signature, when the physician orders the Medical Nutrition Therapy Protocol and when within the dietitian’s scope of practice.
  • Complete and document follow-up to assessments and consultations according to standards.
  • Attend local or national meetings and conferences requested by physicians or required to maintain hospital-program accreditation or foster partnerships with other facilities.
  • Provide guidance and supervise the daily activities of the nutritional therapy support team when applicable, including difficult or unusual diet orders and tube-feeding or infant-formula calculations.
  • Document potential or actual errors or harmful interactions involving nutrition-care assistants when appropriate, provide intervention, and participate in disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Work with physicians, nurse managers, nursing staff, and speech pathologists to improve patient medical nutrition therapy, including diet-texture changes, aspiration-risk food and texture selection, and medication timing to prevent drug-nutrient interactions.
  • Address patient food complaints, provide alternative selections or arrangements, and follow up with managers on food-quality issues.
  • Review and update clinical rotation assignments annually to reflect practice changes and intern feedback unless determined by the student’s university.
  • Develop and teach specialty classes for interns, such as renal nutrition, oncology, and nutrition support.
  • Monitor interns to ensure they meet standards before working unsupervised, review and co-sign their medical-record documentation, correct assignments, evaluate progress, and assess case-study presentations.
  • Develop and present in-services to healthcare personnel, food-service personnel, and students as requested.
  • Develop and present lectures to community groups as requested.
  • Perform frequent walking, sitting, and standing.
  • Perform work primarily in patient-care units, with some office, classroom, meeting-room, and occasional community-speaking duties.
