Westinghouse plans $1 billion expansion at facility in Richland County.

Westinghouse plans $1 billion expansion at facility in Richland County. Updated October 21, 2026 11:39 AM Gift Article A nuclear energy company will do a major expansion of its Richland County campus. Westinghouse Electric Company, which has had a facility on Bluff Road in Hopkins since the late 1960s, will do a $1 billion expansion at the campus, Gov. Henry McMaster's office said in a Wednesday news release. The expansion plans are for the construction of "one of the most advanced nuclear fuel factories in the United States," the release notes. The $1 billion investment will "significantly boost commercial scale low enriched uranium plus (LEU+) fuel production," the release noted. Officials said that LEU+ fuel has a higher level of uranium enrichment, increasing reactor power output at factories. Initially built in 1968, the Westinghouse facility in Hopkins is one of the largest nuclear fuel plants in the world. It produces fuel pellets, fuel rods, fuel assemblies and fuel components for other Westinghouse plants and various global customers, officials noted. About 1,200 people work at the Hopkins facility. Construction on the expansion has already begun, the release stated, and is expected to begin operations in 2030. The release did not specify if or how many new jobs would be associated with the expansion. "South Carolina is already leading America's nuclear renaissance, and this announcement further strengthens our commitment to help meet the clean energy needs of the future," McMaster said in a statement. "Westinghouse has been a critical partner in this effort, and we look forward to it expanding its work in our state to create next-generation fuel products that will continue to support nuclear energy production well into the future." Richland County Council Chairwoman Jesica Mackey said the Westinghouse announcement highlights the company's longstanding impact in the county. "Beyond the significant investment that will strengthen our schools and local infrastructure, this new facility will move Lower Richland forward as one of the world's leading providers of clean energy," Mackey said in a statement. "Our workforce has supported this facility for generations, and this expansion ensures that we'll continue to see high-paying jobs and economic stability for years to come." Westinghouse investing $1B to expand Richland County nuclear fuel facility.

Westinghouse investing $1B to expand Richland County nuclear fuel facility. Posted: Oct 21, 2026 / 07:43 AM EDT Updated: Oct 21, 2026 / 07:43 AM EDT COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) - Gov. Henry McMaster's office announced early Wednesday morning that Westinghouse Electric Company will invest about $1 billion to expand its Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Richland County and build a new facility to produce next-generation nuclear fuel. The expansion at Westinghouse's Bluff Road campus in Hopkins will significantly increase production of low-enriched uranium plus, or LEU+, fuel, according to the governor's office. LEU+ fuel has a higher uranium enrichment than traditional commercial nuclear fuel, allowing reactors to generate more power while reducing refueling downtime and associated costs. The company said construction is already underway, with operations expected to begin in 2030. Westinghouse President and CEO Dan Sumner called the project "a transformative milestone" for both the company and the nuclear energy industry. "By evolving our LEU+ operations, we're securing a clean energy supply, strengthening energy independence and creating new opportunities in South Carolina," Sumner said. Built in 1968, the Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility is one of the world's largest nuclear fuel plants. The facility produces fuel pellets, rods, assemblies and components that support nuclear power generation in the United States and abroad. Gov. Henry McMaster said the investment further strengthens South Carolina's role in the nation's nuclear energy sector. "South Carolina is already leading America's nuclear renaissance, and this announcement further strengthens our commitment to help meet the clean energy needs of the future," McMaster said. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the project. State officials did not immediately announce how many jobs the expansion is expected to create. Westinghouse said the new facility will support both existing and future customers as demand for advanced nuclear fuel continues to grow.
