Requirements
  • Valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse or Licensed Psychiatric Technician license.
  • Current CPR Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers.
  • Knowledge of detoxification assessment and treatment procedures.
  • Familiarity with the disease concept of addiction treatment.
  • Knowledge of 12-step treatment and cognitive aspects of addictive disease treatment.
  • Knowledge of assisting in developing and following treatment plans for clients on a caseload.
  • Ability to identify signs of withdrawal from major classes of abused substances and apply this knowledge to treating chemically dependent patients.
  • Ability to administer medication, process physician orders, and process lab results.
  • Completion of satisfactory background and reference checks.
  • Maintenance of current and valid required licensure, registration, and certification.
  • Annual influenza vaccination, unless exempt under the stated medical criteria.
  • Passing a drug and alcohol test, tuberculosis test or chest X-ray, and physical examination.
Responsibilities
  • Administer medications prescribed by a physician.
  • Assist dietary staff in identifying patients on special diets and assuring compliance with dietary orders.
  • Complete nursing assessments under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Update treatment care plans under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Participate in treatment planning by identifying patients’ problems, needs, and strengths; suggesting treatment-plan modifications based on observed behavior; and providing input into discharge planning.
  • Implement patients’ treatment plans by monitoring progress, communicating behavioral information to the treatment team, maintaining communication with patients, family members, and referral sources, facilitating or co-facilitating educational and recovery groups, encouraging participation in therapeutic activities, supervising patients for safety and treatment involvement, and providing input during shift reports.
  • Accompany and transport patients as assigned.
  • Help maintain the therapeutic milieu on the unit, including facilitating community meetings.
  • Maintain patient, program, department, and related documentation.
  • Orient new patients to the unit, program, and milieu.
  • Provide general nursing-care assistance appropriate to adult addictive-disease patients as assigned and supervised by the nurse in charge.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and therapeutic physical environment for patients.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living when consistent with their treatment plans and needs.
  • Perform clerical and administrative assignments supporting patient care, the department, and organizational operations.
  • Provide backup services to the Needs Assessment and Referral Department.
  • Participate in activities that enhance professional growth and development.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of psychiatric nursing experience.
