Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Consulting drives growth: Mercer and Oliver Wyman's group grew 8% organically in the June 2026 quarter, versus 3% for broking.
  • Profits cushion jobs: Marsh kept about 27 cents of operating profit per sales dollar in 2025, before one-time costs.
  • Many career paths under one employer: 95,000+ colleagues span broking, reinsurance, benefits and strategy consulting in 130 countries.

What critics are saying

  • Expect cuts: Thrive, announced October 2025, sets aside $500 million, mostly severance and technology, to save $400 million yearly.
  • Pricing works against broking: Marsh's index shows commercial rates fell 6% in the June 2026 quarter, an eighth straight drop.
  • Back-office roles are being consolidated: a Business and Client Services unit is pooling operations and technology teams company-wide.

What makes Marsh & McLennan unique

  • Consulting is a third of the business: Mercer and the Oliver Wyman group earned 36% of 2025 revenue.
  • Investment management sets it apart: Mercer is the world's largest outsourced chief investment office, running portfolios for institutions.
  • Scale sets it apart: 2025 revenue grew 10% to $27.0 billion across broking, reinsurance and consulting.
