About the job

Requirements
  • Seven or more years of software engineering experience, including production systems, integrations, and operations.
  • Two or more years of engineering management experience, including hiring, setting direction, coaching, and developing engineers across levels, with clear examples of their growth, and shaping how a team operates and delivers.
  • A track record of delivering complex technical work at quality while balancing feature delivery against reliability and technical investment.
  • Experience leading teams that own production systems, including on-call, incident response, and reliability.
  • A track record of building inclusive, collaborative cultures grounded in psychological safety, agency, and continuous learning.
  • Technical credibility to guide architecture and trade-off decisions across TypeScript and Node.js web applications and services, including customer-facing products, API design, and third-party integrations.
  • Hands-on background with TypeScript and Node.js, modern front-end frameworks such as React, and cloud infrastructure on AWS, including containerization and orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes, and CI/CD.
  • A data-informed approach to team health, delivery, and reliability, with good judgment about what to measure.
  • Comfort leading through shifting priorities and balancing team capacity against business needs.
Responsibilities
  • Set team direction and standards, set the hiring bar and run the interview process, plan capacity, and shape the team's day-to-day operations.
  • Run 1:1s, provide real-time feedback and performance reviews, coach engineers toward individualized growth, address performance issues early, and build a culture of psychological safety, transparency, agency, and high standards.
  • Guide architecture and trade-off decisions, own application-level technical strategy, evaluate third-party technology and integrations, shape epics across reliability, tooling, and security, and set the team's technical direction.
  • Own engineering processes, including pull request and merge policy, ticket hygiene, environment consistency, build and versioning, and repository standards; own on-call health and incident follow-through; and own service availability and performance so production problems become prioritized engineering work.
  • Partner with Product and Design through discovery to shape scope and provide credible estimates; manage capacity, planning, and prioritization across feature delivery, technical investment, and operational reliability; and be accountable for release quality and predictability.
  • Collaborate with the team's senior engineers and peer Engineering Managers, and work with Product, Design, QA, Support, and infrastructure partners; keep leadership informed on progress, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Own the team's overall health and effectiveness, including its collaboration with dependent and partner teams.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in fintech or other regulated environments where correctness, auditability, and compliance shape software development.
  • Consumer or customer-facing product development at scale, with a strong sense of user experience and product quality.
  • Experience leading teams that use AI-assisted development tooling effectively, with a point of view on its effect on team output and code quality standards.
  • Experience with payments, billing, or identity and authentication systems.
  • Experience with microservices and event-driven architectures.

About the company

Topstep connects aspiring retail futures traders with a funded trading path. It provides a simulated trading environment, coaching, and objective evaluation tools that let traders practice, learn risk management, and build the discipline needed for professional trading. Traders complete a performance-based evaluation in a simulated account, meeting defined profit targets and risk limits to qualify for a funded live account. This makes funding contingent on demonstrable skill and consistency rather than just capital. Topstep distinguishes itself by offering a clear, rules-based path to funding, coaching resources, and a structured environment designed to cultivate professional habits. The company’s goal is to help people safely learn, improve, and eventually trade with company-provided capital in real markets.
