Requirements
  • EEC certification is required.
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least one year of supervised relevant work experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and Outlook email is required.
  • The candidate must be able to work in person at the Newton site and perform daily outdoor playground duties in varying weather conditions.
  • The candidate must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs or a hill to outside space, climb stairs with children between floors or in an emergency, and continually bend, kneel, and reach.
  • The candidate must be able to lift and carry young children weighing up to 20–30 pounds regularly, frequently stoop or squat, and frequently sit on the floor or in very small chairs.
  • The candidate must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The candidate must maintain child safety while multitasking and managing competing priorities.
  • The candidate must maintain confidentiality regarding children and families and uphold professionalism and customer service expectations.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate regularly with co-teachers, colleagues, and the director to develop a high-quality program based on observations that support each child's intellectual, social-emotional, moral, and physical development.
  • Work with the lead teacher to implement developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum.
  • Communicate and document children's interactions and experiences in alignment with best practices and policy.
  • Collaborate with co-teachers to assess children's developmental stages and assist with maintaining records, including writing progress reports and play-based assessments using COR Advantage.
  • Use best practices incorporating Massachusetts EEC and JCC SHEVA frameworks and curriculum guidelines, and comply with EEC regulations and NAEYC guidelines.
  • Maintain an aesthetically pleasing, organized, and vibrant classroom environment that promotes health, safety, and positive, age-appropriate developmental experiences.
  • Set limits consistently using positive language and provide emotional safety for each child; maintain classroom management.
  • Work with and incorporate suggestions from the regular support of the Child Development Specialist.
  • Assist with documenting learning as an instructional and curriculum tool using portfolios, observational checklists, play-based assessments, digital photography or iPad, journals, or other methods determined by the center director.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating children's classroom files, noting allergies or special traits relevant to supporting each child's potential.
  • Instruct and foster learning through age-appropriate activities, materials, and experiences that encourage children to explore and develop through play; provide a healthy, safe, secure, positive, nurturing, and engaging learning environment.
  • Help each child develop a positive self-image and respect each child's right to be an individual.
  • Facilitate each child's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth and development, including verbalizing feelings and emotions.
  • Encourage each child's independence and sense of competency.
  • Assist with fostering each child's awareness of their needs and understanding and respect for the rights of others.
  • Build positive, interactive, and effective relationships with families through informal conversations, feedback, and conferences.
  • Aid parents and children in transitioning and adjusting to school.
  • Inform parents about children's developmental stages and developmentally appropriate curriculum; communicate supportively and informatively with each child's parents daily and maintain classroom newsletters.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents about classroom activities and their administration.
  • Participate in scheduled parent conferences throughout the year.
  • Represent the JCC Early Learning Centers' mission and philosophy in work with children and families.
  • Create a welcoming, dynamic environment where each individual is valued and respected.
  • Support JCC Greater Boston's mission, vision, and values through personal role modeling.
  • Attend JCC meetings and participate in department goals and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field such as elementary education, social work, or psychology is preferred but not required.
