Huawei H1 profit plunges 36% to $3.5B as R&D spending jumps 25%

Huawei Technologies reported a 36% drop in first-half net profit to 23.81 billion yuan ($3.54 billion), whilst revenue rose 9.6% to 467.82 billion yuan. The Chinese technology company attributed the profit decline to rising input costs and increased research and development spending. R&D expenditure jumped 25% to 121.38 billion yuan, representing 25.9% of revenue, as Huawei invested heavily in AI, communications technology and chip capabilities. Higher memory chip prices also affected profitability in its consumer business division. The results reflect Huawei's efforts to reduce reliance on foreign technology following years of US export restrictions. The company said its first-half performance met forecasts but noted its full-year outlook remains under review due to external uncertainty and elevated input costs.
