Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field, or a relevant combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Five years of experience in a workers' compensation claims environment, including reviewing, investigating, and closing complex workers' compensation claims.
  • Two years of AF Group Claims Representative II experience involving discretion in determining compensability of complex claims and/or handling complex, high-touch, or labor-intensive customers.
  • Proficiency using computers and company-standard software specific to the position.
  • Knowledge of medical and legal terminology related to the work.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation laws and regulations, including jurisdictional laws.
  • Ability to negotiate, build consensus, and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to train and mentor others.
  • California workers' compensation claims experience.
Responsibilities
  • Verify workers' compensation coverage of employers and injured employees.
  • Determine claim compensability through thorough investigation.
  • Determine the causal relationship between the reported injury and incident to ensure appropriate payment of benefits.
  • Facilitate return to work for injured employees.
  • Establish timely and appropriate claim reserves within authority based on anticipated financial exposure.
  • Document claim details with potential for subrogation recovery, including the amount of potential recovery.
  • Manage medical bills for non-indemnity and indemnity claims associated with the claimed injury and approve payment based on the treatment plan and medical support.
  • Conclude and close files following claim resolution while meeting internal performance standards, complying with state legislation, and managing expenses.
  • Negotiate settlements with attorneys or injured parties within authority to bring cases to final disposition.
  • Work with the manager on complex files or files above settlement or reserve authority.
  • Manage outside vendors to support cost-containment efforts.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Stay current on workers' compensation statutes, case law, and rehabilitation advancements to accurately interpret and apply relevant laws.
  • Mentor team members.
  • Conduct audits of claim files.
  • Act as a backup for the team leader.
  • Coordinate special projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
  • Experience handling claims in multiple jurisdictions is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
