Walmart commits $6B to Symbotic to automate 25 distribution centres

Walmart has signed an expanded agreement with Symbotic, committing about $6 billion to automate 25 US regional distribution centres. The money will also support wider supply chain projects over several years. The spend points to a heavy bet on warehouse robotics and e-commerce inventory management, aimed at denser storage, faster fulfilment, and lower long-term operating costs. Because the deal is capital intensive and spread over years, its near-term effect on results is likely limited. Walmart also bundled its Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus memberships for $120 a year, leaning further into recurring fee income.

Walmart Inc. enters agreement with Base Power to offer home energy solutions to customers. Published on 10/30/2026 at 05:05 pm EDT S&P Capital IQ Walmart Inc. announced a strategic investment in Base Power, a Texas-based energy company, along with an agreement that will make Base?s home energy offerings available to Walmart customers and Sam?s Club members? expanding access to affordable energy solutions that can benefit both households and the grid. Beginning in November, customers and members who enroll in an eligible Base home battery offering at participating Walmart and Sam?s Club locations will receive 20% off Base Power?s standard upfront battery installation fee. Base Power installs, owns and maintains its home battery systems, with customers paying an upfront installation fee, which is a fraction of the cost of traditional whole-home backup solutions. In eligible areas of Texas, Base also offers electricity plans designed to help customers lower their bills. Texas is Base Power's largest and most established market, where Base serves more than 35,000 members. More than 20,000 of those households have a Base battery at home, and the remaining members have their electricity from Base. Walmart is launching these offerings in Texas first and expects to expand to additional locations and markets over time. Product availability, savings potential, installation requirements and pricing vary by location, utility service area and customer circumstances. Customers and members can meet with Base representatives at participating Walmart and Sam's Club locations to learn about available services, ask questions and enroll. (C) S&P Capital IQ - 2026

Walmart revealed as company behind massive $400 million robotic distribution center coming to Cibolo, bringing hundreds of jobs.

Walmart revealed as company behind massive $400 million robotic distribution center coming to Cibolo, bringing hundreds of jobs. CIBOLO, TX (October 30, 2026) - A massive $400 million development is headed to the San Antonio area as retail giant Walmart has been identified as the Fortune 500 company behind a highly anticipated project in Cibolo, Texas, bringing hundreds of new jobs and a next-generation robotic distribution center to the growing community northeast of San Antonio. Previously operating under the mysterious code name "Project Theo," the development was officially linked to Walmart after its subsidiary, Wal-Mart Stores East LP, filed construction documents with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on October 28, 2026. The project calls for the construction of a 744,433-square-foot automated distribution facility at 3641 S. Santa Clara Road in Cibolo, occupying approximately 126 acres of land that once served as the San Antonio Raceway. The facility will feature advanced robotics, automated warehouse equipment, and technology designed to improve the movement and distribution of merchandise throughout Walmart's supply chain. Construction is currently scheduled to begin February 1, 2027, with an anticipated completion date of August 1, 2029. Former San Antonio Raceway site to become high-tech distribution hub. The development represents a major transformation for the former San Antonio Raceway property, a location once known to motorsports enthusiasts throughout South Central Texas. Under Walmart's plans, the property will be redeveloped into a large-scale distribution campus featuring a 712,500-square-foot warehouse connected to a 31,933-square-foot office facility. The distribution center will incorporate next-generation automation technology, including robotics and advanced material-handling systems designed to streamline warehouse operations. Automated distribution facilities typically use robotic systems to transport, organize, and process merchandise, reducing repetitive manual tasks while improving efficiency. The investment reflects the growing role of automation in the retail industry as major companies continue modernizing their logistics networks to meet consumer demand. The development is also expected to strengthen Cibolo's position as an emerging location for major industrial and commercial investment along the Interstate 35 corridor. At least 425 full-time jobs expected. Beyond its massive physical footprint, the project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for residents throughout Cibolo, Schertz, New Braunfels, San Antonio, and surrounding communities. According to project details, Walmart is expected to create at least 425 full-time jobs, with wages meeting or exceeding the median wage for the San Antonio metropolitan area. The positions could provide opportunities for workers in warehouse operations, logistics, equipment maintenance, technology, administration, and facility management, although a complete breakdown of available positions has not yet been announced. The projected $400 million capital investment also represents a significant addition to the region's industrial development pipeline. Earlier estimates presented during the project's consideration suggested the total investment could reach as much as $450 million. The City of Cibolo previously approved an economic development incentive agreement valued at approximately $3.25 million to support the project, according to reporting by Community Impact. The agreement reflects the city's efforts to attract major employers and expand its commercial tax base as the surrounding region continues experiencing residential and business growth. Walmart's identity revealed after months of speculation. For months, the development was publicly identified only as Project Theo, with officials describing the potential investor as a Fortune 500 company. The project's substantial investment, employment commitments, and proposed facility size generated interest as Cibolo considered the economic benefits of bringing a major distribution operation to the community. The mystery surrounding the company's identity was resolved when construction filings submitted on October 28 identified Wal-Mart Stores East LP as the owner and operator behind the development. The disclosure confirmed Walmart's plans to establish a major automated logistics operation in the San Antonio metropolitan area. The project represents another example of large national corporations expanding their operations into communities surrounding San Antonio, where available land and access to major transportation corridors continue attracting industrial development. What the development means for the San Antonio area. Cibolo, located northeast of San Antonio in Guadalupe County, has experienced significant growth as residential neighborhoods, commercial businesses, and industrial developments continue expanding throughout the region. The arrival of Walmart's distribution center could provide additional employment opportunities for residents who currently commute to San Antonio or neighboring cities for work. The facility's location near major regional transportation routes may also support Walmart's ability to move products throughout South Central Texas and beyond. In addition to direct employment, the construction project could generate temporary work for contractors, construction crews, equipment suppliers, and other businesses involved in developing the facility. Once operational, the distribution center could also create demand for supporting services, including transportation, maintenance, and logistics-related businesses. However, the development's long-term effects on local traffic, infrastructure, and surrounding properties will depend on the facility's final operating plans and transportation requirements. Construction expected to take more than two years. According to the construction timeline outlined in the state filing, work on the distribution center is scheduled to begin February 1, 2027. The projected completion date is August 1, 2029, giving the development an anticipated construction period of approximately two and a half years. The announced schedule remains subject to potential changes based on permitting, construction progress, weather, and other development factors. Additional details regarding hiring timelines, specific job openings, and the facility's official opening date have not yet been announced. With an estimated $400 million investment, more than 744,000 square feet of planned development, and at least 425 full-time jobs expected, Walmart's Project Theo is positioned to become one of the area's notable industrial investments. For Cibolo, the project marks another step in the community's transformation from a growing suburban city into a destination for major commercial and industrial operations. And for the greater San Antonio region, the development brings the prospect of new jobs, advanced logistics technology, and a significant long-term investment from one of the world's largest retailers.
