Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to four years of experience in a specific trade or in general building maintenance and repair.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license and a driving history acceptable under the Safe Driving Policy.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; and communicate effectively in one-on-one or small-group situations with customers, clients, and employees.
  • Respect patient privacy and maintain the confidentiality of patient information related to treatment.
  • Ability to complete daily records, logs, and timesheets.
  • Ability to perform regular walking; frequently reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; occasionally climb ladders or stairs; and lift or move up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and 50 pounds or more occasionally.
  • Attend required safety training and comply with applicable safety guidelines.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment within assigned areas of Duke University Hospital and Medical Center.
  • Inspect designated facilities and equipment regularly, participate in image rounds when applicable, and maintain ongoing communication with customers to ensure timely responses to repair and maintenance needs.
  • Make minor repairs and corrections and perform routine preventive maintenance on electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and communication systems and equipment.
  • Repair general building facilities, including carpentry, ceiling and floor coverings, doors, windows, and furniture; perform minor painting and patching.
  • Complete or assist with minor service requests as needed.
  • Consult shop personnel in specific trades, refer complex or time-consuming items to them, and assist with repairs when necessary.
  • Inspect fire and smoke partitions for penetrations, patch penetrations as necessary, and report unusual problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Advise management about the condition of facilities and equipment in assigned areas and recommend facility improvements and upgrades for budget planning.
  • Maintain documentation and maintenance records to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and codes.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
