Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or a related field, followed by four years of medical school and additional residency and fellowship specialty training.
- Board certification in surgery.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Administration registration and Florida medical license.
- Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved surgical oncology fellowship.
- Knowledge of professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments.
- Fluency in Spanish is valued for serving local and regional demographics.
Responsibilities
- Oversee outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the program.
- Work closely and collaborate with the Chief and all members of the team, including medical oncologists.
- Coordinate and provide physician scheduling services to ensure coverage when services are scheduled.
- Maintain administrative records pertaining to physician scheduling and ensure hospitals have reasonable access to those records.
- Perform daily rounds on assigned inpatients and provide inpatient follow-up throughout the inpatient stay.
- Provide outpatient professional medical services in all scheduled program clinics.
- Participate in regular outpatient clinics for the program.
- Coordinate inpatient and clinic care under the program with each patient's primary physician.
- Collaborate with physicians and hospital personnel, including case managers, to reduce medically unnecessary resource use and length of stay and coordinate interdepartmental patient care.
- Assist bed control and other hospital personnel as needed to facilitate patient throughput.
- Respond promptly to patient-care-related inquiries from patients, physicians, and hospital personnel.
- Implement clinical effectiveness programs, including clinical pathways, guidelines, and protocols.
- Participate in root cause analyses and related activities conducted for the program at all sites of service.
- Implement program quality goals and quality initiatives with hospital personnel to address identified deficiencies.
- Participate in periodic meetings with unit personnel regarding core measures and patient and physician satisfaction.
- Implement teaching activities for residents and fellows rotating through the program.
- Work with hospital personnel to obtain mutually agreed-upon program designations of distinction.
- Provide professional medical services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, to program inpatients and outpatients in collaboration with faculty in the section and division.
- Participate in clinical, research, and educational activities for the Division of Surgical Oncology and Department of Surgery, with emphasis on leading and growing the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy program.
- Deliver surgical oncology patient care at the University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Jackson Memorial Hospital.
- Help implement the division's strategic plan covering clinical, financial, educational, and research objectives.
- Perform patient care activities for surgical oncology patients, develop an independent practice, and teach medical students, residents, and fellows.
- Pursue research protocols and grants, secure independent funding, and contribute to the academic enterprise in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Collaborate with other departments to grow the surgical oncology research program.
Desired Qualifications
- Three to five years of post-fellowship clinical experience in gastrointestinal surgical oncology.
- Three to five years of post-fellowship clinical experience in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
