Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Valid California Nurse Anesthetist license.
  • Valid California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification by the American Heart Association.
  • ACLS certification.
  • AANA certification.
  • Ability to work shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, call, and holidays.
  • Legal right to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties and tasks under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist.
  • Perform pre-operative assessment and write appropriate pre-operative orders as specified by approved standard procedure.
  • Administer all types of anesthetics and anesthesia techniques.
  • Monitor patients intra-operatively and provide for a safe intra-operative course and emergence.
  • Assist with post-operative care as necessary.
  • Identify pre-existing disease entities and their potential impact upon anesthesia care and planning through documentation of medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, electrocardiograms, and chest X-rays.
  • Understand interactions between pre-operative drug therapy and the proposed anesthetic plan and agents for all age groups.
  • Identify physical-examination abnormalities that may pose problems in anesthesia management.
  • Determine medical indications for delaying elective surgery and for pre-operative specialty consultation.
  • Explain proposed anesthetic techniques, alternatives, risks, and problems to obtain documented legal informed consent before administering anesthesia.
  • Document significant information in the anesthesia record covering pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative events.
  • Determine patient need and indications for monitoring modalities, including arterial lines and Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheters.
  • Safely insert venous and arterial monitoring lines and devices under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist.
  • Apply knowledge of pharmacology, dosage, side effects, and contraindications of drugs used in anesthesia practice at UCI.
  • Perform monitored, regional, and general anesthesia techniques commonly used at UCI for patients of all age categories.
  • Identify adverse effects of anesthesia techniques and initiate emergency treatment while informing the attending anesthesiologist.
  • Apply cardiac, respiratory, neurological, endocrine, and renal physiology to intra-operative events and management.
  • Recognize airway abnormalities and their anesthesia implications.
  • Perform airway-management techniques, including safe insertion of nasal and oral airways, laryngoscopy, and endotracheal intubation.
  • Identify the safe level of insensibility or narcosis required for each patient and surgical procedure.
  • Recognize return of consciousness and reflexes signaling safe emergence from anesthesia, transport patients to the recovery room, and provide an informed report to qualified medical personnel.
  • Recognize post-operative anesthesia complications, initiate emergency treatment when directed by the attending anesthesiologist, and document appropriately.
  • Assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergencies by recognizing cardiac arrest and shock, initiating CPR and airway management, and inserting monitoring lines under an anesthesiologist's direction.
  • Perform selected educational, supervisory, and administrative tasks, including supervising student anesthetists when assigned and assessing orientation and progress.
