Responsibilities
  • Drive an ambulance in response to emergency calls, request additional resources for incident control as required, and ensure safety at the scene.
  • Respond to emergency calls and provide basic and advanced life support and emergency care to sick and injured patients; determine the nature and extent of injuries and illnesses and assist in decisions regarding appropriate courses of action; lift and carry patients and transport them to appropriate medical facilities.
  • Perform immobilization and bandaging, wound treatment, bleeding control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardiac activity monitoring, medication administration, defibrillation, intravenous therapy, advanced airway management, oxygen administration, and other procedures permitted by certification; monitor patient condition; relay diagnostic signs to medical personnel; and report to emergency room personnel upon arrival.
  • Assist with extrication and other rescue procedures as necessary.
  • Provide instruction and leadership to lower-level emergency medical technicians as assigned.
  • Notify dispatch personnel and the Coroner’s Office in the case of patient death and arrange for the protection of property and evidence at the scene.
  • Prepare run reports documenting patient care, response time, compliance with medical protocol, and patient billing information.
  • Provide emergency medical services coverage for special community events as assigned.
  • Participate in public education and community relations efforts and events as required.
  • Inspect assigned vehicles and equipment for cleanliness, sanitation, proper condition, and adequate supplies; clean and decontaminate vehicles and equipment; and report vehicle or equipment maintenance needs.
  • Stock supplies in the station and ambulances as needed.
