About the Job

Requirements

  • A PhD in a life science field plus at least 2 years of work experience in scientific writing and editing, or 5 or more years of equivalent industry experience.
  • Ability to read a method section or codebase in an unfamiliar area, determine what the algorithm does, and identify undocumented assumptions by asking the author targeted questions.
  • Demonstrated technical writing, such as documentation, tutorials, or method write-ups, ideally public.
  • Ability to improve another person's argument and structure and copy edit the work without flattening the author's voice.
  • Comfort with Git, GitHub, Markdown, notebooks, and at least one documentation toolchain such as Sphinx, MkDocs, Quarto, Jupyter Book, or similar.
  • Ability to distinguish the audience needs of method documentation, general scientific writing, and funder proposals, and adapt writing accordingly.
  • Experience publishing research outputs in formats beyond static PDFs, such as interactive figures, executable notebooks, navigable datasets, or web-native publications.
  • Ability to work across several programs in different technical domains.

Responsibilities

  • Edit research outputs and scientific publications for content, including argument, structure, framing, and reader needs, as well as copy editing.
  • Draft and edit blog posts based on interviews with scientists, internal documents, and raw results.
  • Ensure every release meets Astera's Open Science policy, including persistent identifiers, open licenses, data in FAIR repositories, and runnable code, and maintain the pipeline of upcoming publications.
  • Advise on publication strategy and the ideal unit of release, helping scientists identify the smallest independently useful item they could publish immediately.
  • Work with scientists to identify findings poorly served by conventional formats and propose alternatives such as interactive figures, web-hosted visualizations, or executable code.
  • Direct external designers and developers on figures, interactive builds, and demos by writing briefs, evaluating results, and managing revision cycles.
  • Build templates and tools that make nontraditional publication formats an inexpensive default rather than a one-off effort.
  • Refine slide decks for talks, funder meetings, and internal reviews.
  • Help researchers document computational methods and algorithms, including what each method does, its assumptions and parameters, how it fails, and how users can determine whether it worked.
  • Partner with the Data Steward on documentation and dataset standards for open-source releases.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience building interactive scientific content, such as with D3, Observable, Plotly, or Quarto.
  • Experience maintaining or contributing to open-source scientific software.
  • Familiarity with structural biology, drug discovery and ADMET, gene and drug delivery, or scientific infrastructure.

About the Company

Astera

Invests in early-stage systemic-change startups

Astera Institute incubates and tests high-leverage ideas in their earliest stages to drive major social and systemic impact. It supports overlooked areas by funding and mentoring founders who can rapidly launch initiatives and create a snowball effect that scales impact. The program works by providing early-stage support, resources, and guidance to help ideas move from concept to action, enabling rapid experimentation and learning. Unlike more traditional funds that search for immediate returns, Astera distinguishes itself by focusing on high-leverage problems, seeking systemic change rather than incremental gains. Its goal is to maximize humanity's good in the most efficient possible way by accelerating breakthrough ideas that can reshape systems.
