Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • At least one year of related work experience in a construction trade such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or mechanical work is required.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing tools and materials is required.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards, is required.
  • Ability to use tools and materials safely is required.
  • Ability to solve problems and manage information is required.
  • Proficient written and verbal English communication skills at at least a high school graduate level are required to interact with departmental and Johns Hopkins Hospital staff.
  • Ability to identify and avoid hazards indicated by warning labels, signage, lights, and other warnings is required.
  • Ability to perform work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade, industry, or engineered standards is required.
Responsibilities
  • Change all types of fluorescent and incandescent lights, including changing ballasts and fluorescent light starters, and replace or clean light fixtures, lenses, and grids.
  • Replace ceiling tiles; check and tighten hand and guard railings; repair cubicle and window curtain tracks; and install toilet paper and paper towel dispensers.
  • Transport vacant patient beds, inspect and repair shop equipment, and assist maintenance mechanics in maintaining and repairing building systems and components.
  • Perform work under general supervision using tools and techniques from various trades, including electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing.
