Requirements
  • Active Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification from the Washington State Department of Health is required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required (able to provide documents during the interview).
  • Foreign applicants require equivalency in the United States for the high school diploma.
  • Graduation from and certification from a recognized United States phlebotomy school program or documentation proving foreign education accreditation is required.
  • A pre-hire competency test must be passed.
  • Pre-hire and annual employee health screenings are required.
  • Annual influenza vaccine is required, with medical or religious exemptions handled per administration policy; employees with exemptions must wear a mask during flu season.

Responsibilities
  • Follows Universal Precautions against biohazard contamination during blood drawing, handling, preservation and transportation of body fluids, keeping area clean and disinfected, disposing of contaminated material in proper containers, using personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Observe and follow OSHA safety and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA Privacy) regulations.
  • Greet the patients.
  • Communicate well with the patients to ensure they are kept calm and still.
  • Identify patient with name and date of birth, label tubes and follow proper timing of collection as needed with high attention to detail to ensure patient’s address is correct.
  • Collect human fluids, blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary from patients using proper collection tubes for tests ordered and provide clear instructions to the patients.
  • Verify that proper tests are ordered in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Follow the written policies and procedures for a comprehensive quality assurance program and quality control procedures, providing and assuring accurate and reliable test results and quality reports.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of temperature; preventive maintenance activities; method procedures; quality control; and quality assurance.
  • Follow the Policies and Procedures Laboratory Manual, safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain constant contact with providers and nurses for patient care.
  • Restock reagents and request replacement supplies from the referral lab for specimen collection and transport; verify reagents’ expiration dates.
  • Comply with HIPAA to protect the privacy and security of personal health information and follow OSHA and CLIA regulations.
  • Assist support personnel by assisting them during the day across various departments as requested, and work overtime hours as necessary.
  • Prepare room for the patient for EKG; apply electrodes, operate the EKG machine to obtain proper tracings; identify patient by name and DOB and register in the monitor; label tracings as required and consult with the provider if any unusual circumstances affect the test; maintain and store the equipment; troubleshoot with the manufacturer; verify proper order in the EHR.
  • Run calibration of spirometry equipment every 24 hours for day of use; identify patient by name and DOB; prepare the patient and test according to manufacturers’ instructions and laboratory policies; report accurate results to a licensed provider; maintain and store the equipment; work with the manufacturer for equipment troubleshooting.
  • Verify the test order in the EHR.
  • Draw patient’s blood and follow instructions for specimen processing.
  • Process specimens according to the reference lab guidelines.
  • Track and review tests results in the EHR every day.
  • Communicate with providers, clinic staff and reference lab for smooth operation of the department.
