About the Job

Requirements

  • A PhD or equivalent demonstrated expertise in plasma physics or applied physics, or a related field, focused on plasma-wave interactions or radio-frequency heating of magnetically confined plasmas.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one electron cyclotron propagation or absorption code, such as TRAVIS, TORBEAM, C3PO, or IPF-FD3D.
  • Proficiency in Python for simulation scripting, data analysis, and visualization, and the ability to read and modify legacy Fortran or C/C++ code.
  • Ability to translate physics outputs into engineering requirements and hardware constraints.
  • Ability to work across physics and engineering disciplines and with external academic partners.
  • Understanding of quasi-optical propagation of millimeter waves, ray tracing, and its limitations.

Responsibilities

  • Run ray-tracing and beam-tracing simulations of electron cyclotron wave propagation and absorption using codes such as TRAVIS, RAYTRAX, and more complex beam or full-wave model codes.
  • Develop an integrated modeling framework that couples wave deposition to transport codes, enabling temperature and density profile optimization and validation of heating-scenario performance.
  • Build and maintain Python-based post-processing pipelines to automate scenario scanning and interface simulation outputs with the Alpha integrated design framework.
  • Model Electron Cyclotron Current Drive and assess its ability to modify rotational transform and equilibrium in the Alpha quasi-isodynamic configuration.
  • Contribute to design reviews, interface control documents, and technical reports to ensure simulation results are traceable and actionable.

About the Company

Proxima Fusion

Develops commercial fusion reactors using QI-HTS

Proxima Fusion designs and builds fusion power plants based on quasi-isodynamic high-temperature-superconductor (QI-HTS) stellarators. Its main project, Alpha, is a net-energy stellarator demonstrator near Munich developed with partners Bavaria, IPP and RWE to test and prove the technology before a commercial Stellaris plant planned for the 2030s. The company leverages its roots as the first Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics spin-out and uses advanced HTS magnets to create steady magnetic confinement for fusion plasma, enabling a scalable path to power generation. Proxima differentiates itself by pursuing a clear commercial roadmap from a world-class research lineage, collaboration with industry and government partners, and a focus on the Stellaris design to move from a demonstrator to a market-ready fusion power plant. The goal is to deliver commercially viable fusion energy, moving from the Alpha demonstrator to fully commercial Stellaris plants in the 2030s.
