Requirements
- Graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing is required for nurse practitioners.
- National certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center is required for nurse practitioners.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required for nurse practitioners.
- Nurse practitioners must be privileged as first assists and hold Registered Nurse First Assistant certification.
- A Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required for physician assistants.
- Graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved physician assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required for physician assistants.
- Physician assistants must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Basic Life Support certification is required; additional Advanced Life Support training may be required at the department's discretion.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role requires working closely with others, working irregular hours, and working around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and specialty.
- Deliver evidence-based care, promote positive patient outcomes, maintain professional and regulatory standards, and support the clinical, educational, and operational goals of the department and organization.
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, in collaboration with the clinical and faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of surgical urology patients and their caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and coordinate perioperative care, discharge planning, and post-hospital and ambulatory follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the scope of practice.
- Participate in all aspects of the global management of surgical urology patients throughout the system.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for surgical urology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization, immediate post-discharge care, and ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds and consultations, including pre-procedure and surgical urology evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Participate in perioperative patient management, including first assisting in the operating suite.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with surgical urology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate discharge and follow-up by coordinating services and tests required before outpatient clinic appointments.
- Perform procedures according to clinical guidelines, protocols, and the scope of practice for urological surgery.
- Develop individualized plans of care including teaching, discharge planning, follow-up, and referrals.
- Care for patients across the age continuum consistent with educational preparation and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex surgical urology situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic and hospital settings.
- Assist with collecting patient outcome measures.
- Recognize emergencies and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of surgery patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain current knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for surgical urology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
- Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations in patient medical records according to hospital and organizational policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in surgical urology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to surgical urology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUM/UHA Performance Improvement Plan and apply its findings to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret surgical urology data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
- Assist surgery faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
- Surgical and/or urology experience is preferred.
- Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioners are considered.
- A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
