From the Editor's Desk: Clemson is losing its small-town feel at an unprecedented rate. September 3, 2026 The recent replacements of local businesses with nationwide chains are part of a broader trend of urbanization at Clemson. For years, Clemson has felt like that old friend who's the same no matter how much time passes. Lately, though, the town is growing less and less familiar. National chains are moving in, longtime local businesses are closing and recognizable spaces are being replaced with common drive-thrus and storefronts. From a new Harris Teeter on Old Greenville Highway to Dutch Bros on Tiger Boulevard and the 7 Brew proposed for the former site of Goober's, Clemson is losing the small-town character we all know and love. While I'm glad the new Harris Teeter will provide another option for everyone's shopping needs, I feel like a choice that better fits Clemson's homely vibe would have been a store like Trader Joe's. Currently, the closest Trader Joe's is 45 minutes away in Greenville. Trader Joe's prices are very affordable (more so than Harris Teeter), the labels for each product are hand-drawn by an employee, food samples are almost always being handed out and cashiers are famous for their warm demeanors and inclination to strike up conversation with any and all shoppers. While I'm sure Harris Teeter employees are lovely in their own way, those who work at Trader Joe's truly are always going above and beyond to make sure shoppers feel welcome. To me, these features just fit Clemson. This shift isn't limited to just grocery stores, though. We're seeing it with coffee shops, too, with the opening of nationwide coffee chain, Dutch Bros, just this past semester on Tiger Boulevard, as well as the proposal of 7 Brew Coffee to replace beloved former Clemson dive bar, Goober's, which officially closed late December 2025 following its owner's death. "Why don't we put a dope fly shop there?! We don't need another soulless coffee spot," one Instagram user commented on The Tiger's post about the site proposal. "Removing Clemson staples to put up more drive thrus," another user sarcastically lamented. "Not nearly enough of those on campus." Those were just two of many criticisms. But wait, there's more! Over the summer, Andee O'Sell, the owner of Andee's Spill the Beans - a long-running ice cream shop downtown that was passed down to O'Sell from another Clemson family - posted a picture of a garbage can inside the shop with discarded cups and napkins branded with the logo of nearby ice cream chain Handel's, which joined the repertoire of downtown Clemson businesses recently in early 2024. "11 years in and last night broke my spirit as a small business owner. So many people brought in ice cream from another shop to enjoy my seating & activities," O'Sell wrote. "This is the place I work so hard to keep afloat in downtown Clemson." All these changes, which seem to be happening more frequently and at greater levels as time goes on, represent Clemson's overall shift towards urbanization. From the city's downtown streetscape project - another can of worms I don't care to open right now - to new student housing developments, parking garages and the replacement of small businesses with national chains, I'm saddened by the fact that it seems as though the Clemson we've all known and loved for years is rapidly disappearing before our eyes. My question is: what do you plan to do about it? Kat Pugh is a senior English major from Clayton, California. She can be reached at [email protected].
