UNFPA hails Qatar's progress in linking population trends with development.

UNFPA hails Qatar's progress in linking population trends with development. Shaima Sheriff Published on October 19, 2026 | 12:00 AM Jocelyn Fenard Qatar has made significant progress in integrating population dynamics into its economic and social development, with advances in healthcare, education, gender equality, and women's workforce participation, a UN official said. Jocelyn Fenard, representative of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) GCC Office, made the remarks on the sidelines of Qatar National Population Day 2026, hosted by the National Planning Council in partnership with UNFPA, the Permanent Population Committee and the Ministry of Public Health. He underlined Qatar's remarkable progress over recent decades in understanding population dynamics and integrating them into economic planning, noting the country's development across several key sectors. Fenard said the annual observance provided an important platform for substantive discussions on population issues, adding that the UNFPA had supported and participated in Qatar's National Population Day for several years. "For us, it is a very important event," he said, describing the UNFPA as a strong supporter of the initiative. Fenard said that the UNFPA works in more than 150 countries across development and humanitarian settings, focusing on public health and population-related issues. In Qatar and across the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), the organisation works with governments to advance progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas linked to population change and the lives of women and girls. He highlighted improvements in healthcare, education and social protection, along with progress in gender equality and women's integration into the labour force, as key aspects of Qatar's development. His remarks underline the importance of understanding population trends not only as demographic indicators, but also as factors that influence economic planning, public services and social development. Population dynamics can shape the demand for healthcare and education, workforce participation and the policies needed to support changing societal needs. Integrating these considerations into national planning is therefore essential to sustainable, long-term development. Qatar National Population Day offers an opportunity to focus on these issues and strengthen dialogue between national institutions and international partners. Fenard's comments also highlighted the value of continued co-operation between Qatar and the UNFPA in supporting development priorities and advancing the SDGs, with particular attention to population-related challenges and opportunities affecting women and girls.

"100 Years of Kindness" Mural unveiled at Whitman Houses.

"100 Years of Kindness" Mural unveiled at Whitman Houses. Artolution, NYCHA, The Public Housing Community Fund, and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Diene Keita unveiled "100 Years of Kindness", a new mural at Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The mural sits on the New York site of Painting Its Futures, the newest collaboration between Artolution and UNFPA that brings together youth from five different communities across five different continents. The team is working with youth ages 18 to 25 in New York, Jordan, Colombia, Kenya, and Tokyo to establish a creative space for exploration of co-creative mural-making processes rooted in community dialogue about young people's dreams for the future; their evolving ideas of family, healthy relationships; and what matters most to them as they plan for the future. The initiative will run in tandem with the UNFPA's State of World Population 2026 Report, which examines the world young people face today and covers ideas like health, bodily autonomy, civic engagement, and human rights. "'100 Years of Kindness' will be a vital piece of the Whitman Houses community for years to come, bringing new life and vibrancy for the residents to enjoy," said Alex Zablocki, Executive Director of the Public Housing Community Fund. "Artolution and the United Nations Population Fund are investing in the young residents of Whitman Houses and giving them a chance to tell their own stories and history. PHCF is excited to be part of this groundbreaking collaboration, bringing creative outlets and inspiring art to this beautiful NYCHA community." "Projects like '100 Years of Kindness' demonstrate how public art can transform our developments into vibrant spaces of connection and pride," said NYCHA Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiatt. "Through the Painting Our Futures initiative, young Whitman Houses residents have a platform to share their hopes for the future and carry their message across generations. We are grateful to Artolution, UNFPA, and the Public Housing Community Fund for their partnership and for investing in resident voices." "'100 Years of Kindness' is a mural that came to life with over 100 youth and seniors telling their stories about the dreams of youth for what the next 100 years will look like," said Dr. Max Frieder, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Artolution. "The arts can become a lifeline, and being able to amplify the voices and stories of this community is [showcasing] how the arts can connect us in an interwoven tapestry of meaning across the world." The residents of Walt Whitman Houses joined together during sessions with Artolution and asked questions like: "How do we create a world with the next 100 years of love, peace, and kindness?" and "What does this look like?" Ultimately, they determined the need for older generations to pass the torch as they will also have to do in the future - passing responsibility, wisdom, and influence between generations of young people gives freedom to shape their own futures. The finished mural carries their shared message across Walt Whitman Houses and throughout the heart of Fort Greene. Photo credit: Tameek Williams

African Women Leaders Network charts bold future at UNGA81 Forum.

African Women Leaders Network charts bold future at UNGA81 Forum. The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), in collaboration with the African Union (AU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and UN Women, convened a landmark Global Forum on Women's Leadership during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81). The high-level gathering drew more than 300 African women leaders from across the continent and the diaspora, alongside African Heads of State, former Presidents, AWLN Elders, senior AU and UN officials, development partners, financial institutions, and private sector executives. Track Investments The event underscored a central question: What should African women's leadership look like over the next decade, and what will it take to ensure women have the power and resources to shape Africa's future? Among the distinguished participants were H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, AWLN Patron and former President of Liberia; H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, President of Ethiopia; H.E. Joyce Banda, former President of Malawi; H.E. Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, former President of Mauritius; H.E. Judith Suminwa Tuluka, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo; and H.E. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Their collective message was clear: women's leadership is not merely about representation, but about necessity in today's rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. The Leadership Dialogue, moderated by Folly Bah Thibault of Al Jazeera English, brought together AWLN Elders to reflect on their experiences at the highest levels of political authority. Discussions highlighted the challenges of navigating national transformation, building solidarity among women leaders, and creating pathways for the next generation. The panel emphasized that representation must translate into meaningful influence, institutional authority, and the ability to shape decisions. Institutional leaders, including Ms. Aïssata De of UNDP, Mme Bineta Diop, AWLN Co-Convener, and Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, reinforced the need to move beyond symbolic presence. They called for sustained investment in women-led initiatives, stronger networks, and resource mobilization to ensure women leaders can exercise real influence on continental and global agendas. The private sector's role was also spotlighted, with contributions from Aisha Maina, Marie Celéste Bagniakana, Ndeye Thiaw, Anta Babacar Ngom, Kadijah Amoah, and Abigail Ony Nwaohuocha. Their interventions stressed the importance of expanding access to capital, strengthening women-led enterprises, and driving corporate action to enhance women's economic leadership. In a significant milestone, Aisha Maina, CEO of Aquarian Consult Limited, was appointed AWLN's first-ever Global Ambassador. Known for her high-impact initiatives, Maina's mandate will focus on consolidating AWLN's achievements, expanding strategic partnerships, and amplifying the Network's visibility and impact across Africa and globally. The Forum also honored Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa with the AWLN Achievement Award, recognizing her exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to advancing women's leadership and Africa's development. The award was presented by H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde. The High-Level Plenary featured Minister Monica Mutsvangwa of Zimbabwe, H.E. Liberata Mulamula, AU Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, and Hon. Lesego Chombo of Botswana. They underscored the urgency of moving from representation to action, calling for stronger political commitment, adequate financing, and accelerated national processes toward the ratification and implementation of the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU CEVAWG). Preceding the Forum was a reception on 25 September, where Madam Bineta Diop and Ms. Diene Keita launched the second edition of the Positive Masculinity initiative, with UNFPA as lead partner. The campaign aims to accelerate the signature and ratification of AU CEVAWG, reinforcing the commitment to ending violence against women and girls. The gathering also celebrated UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, honoring her leadership and contributions to advancing gender equity within the United Nations. As global governance continues to evolve, the AWLN Global Forum made one thing clear: African women must not only be present in decision-making spaces but must also wield the agency, influence, and resources necessary to shape the decisions that will define the next decade. UNFPA introduced the concept of Demographic Intelligence for investment and Economic Diversification at Turkmenistan Investment Forum.

UNFPA introduced the concept of Demographic Intelligence for investment and Economic Diversification at Turkmenistan Investment Forum. 04/10/2026 By Admin ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, October 2, 2026 - On October 1-2, Ashgabat hosted the Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2026), bringing together representatives of government bodies, international financial institutions, global business, and the expert community. The Forum serves as a key international platform for showcasing the country's investment potential, discussing major economic projects, and strengthening strategic partnerships. The event agenda covered key topics including the development of the energy sector, transport, logistics, digital technologies, as well as attracting foreign investment for sustainable economic growth. Kemal Goshliyev, Head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Office in Turkmenistan, participated in the forum. Speaking during Session 6, titled "Strategic Course Towards Economic Diversification: Cooperation with International Financial Organizations and Development Partners," he highlighted the critical role of demographic factors in economic planning. "Demographic shifts are a decisive factor in determining whether long-term capital investments ultimately succeed," emphasized Kemal Goshliyev. In his statement, he also noted that leveraging Demographic Intelligence equips both the state and investors with a clear understanding of workforce dynamics and consumer demand, enabling the timely realization of the demographic dividend and minimizing risks during economic diversification. Strengthening data systems for demographic changes is a priority area of strategic cooperation between UNFPA and Turkmenistan. Through this partnership, UNFPA provides technical support to the Government in population data collection and analysis, including support for the 2022 Complete Population and Housing Census, capacity building in demographic forecasting, and the establishment of a digital statistical population registry. Furthermore, UNFPA actively supports the development of the long-term Strategy for Sustainable Demographic Development of Turkmenistan up to 2050, alongside research initiatives such as the Time-use Survey to expand economic opportunities for women and youth.///nCa, 4 October 2026 (in cooperation with UNFPA Turkmenistan)

Gov Radda seeks cooperation to foster Northwest security.

Gov Radda seeks cooperation to foster Northwest security. Chairman of the Northwest Governors' Forum and Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has called for increased private-sector investment and stronger regional cooperation to accelerate development and address insecurity across Nigeria's Northwest. According to a statement by the chief press secretary to the governor, Ibrahim Kaula, Radda made the call at high-level events held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he presented Katsina's experience with development financing and the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework. Speaking at the inaugural ASIS Global Action Forum, convened by the Sterling One Foundation with UNFPA, RALLY Africa and other partners, he said the challenge was no longer a lack of financing options but the difficulty of attracting private capital into public development projects. The governor said Katsina had benefited from 11 World Bank projects worth about $430 million covering education, water, agriculture, rural roads and environmental development. The African Development Bank is also financing the state's Agro-Industrial Processing Zone with $30 million, while the Islamic Development Bank is providing $60 million for the first phase of its Integrated Agricultural Development Hubs. Radda identified stronger public-private partnership frameworks, de-risking mechanisms, reliable counterpart funding and transparent monitoring as priorities for attracting investment. At a separate high-level event on the Northwest framework, Radda urged the seven states to work collectively on insecurity, poverty, displacement and economic development. "Security must be accompanied by opportunity," he said, arguing that military operations alone could not deliver lasting peace. Radda urged investors and development partners to look beyond the region's security challenges and support projects in agriculture, infrastructure, logistics, skills and enterprise, saying the governors were ready to move from planning to implementation. Also speaking, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed commended the governors for presenting a common regional plan and pledged UN support. She highlighted the Northwest's importance to food production and called for coordinated financing, stronger institutions, jobs and community-focused investments. Mohammed said the UNDP was developing a proposal for a Northwest-led Stabilisation-to-Transformation Programme and Financing Platform. LEADERSHIP Group has got the edge.
