Requirements
  • Be at least 16 years of age, or be a high school graduate or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Have a minimum of six months of experience volunteering, teaching, leading, or instructing children in an organized recreational or childcare setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Temporary Recreation Assistants assigned to a Teen Camp must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pass a Department of Children and Families background check upon hire and as requested.
  • Depending on the assignment, satisfactorily complete a Counselor in Training program.
  • Depending on the assignment, obtain a valid Florida driver's license upon appointment.
  • Have American Red Cross certification, or equivalent, in adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator, and first aid upon appointment.
  • If assigned to a Department of Children and Families licensed program, complete the 40-hour Introductory Child Care Training within 15 months of hire, complete additional specialized Department of Children and Families training courses, or have an education exemption, and complete annual in-service training.
  • Provide individual and group skilled instruction in varied recreational activities.
  • Develop and implement summer camp activities and programs.
  • Develop and teach educational programs for various age groups.
  • Communicate effectively with people of varying ages and abilities, orally and in writing.
  • Read and understand work schedules.
  • Work effectively with and secure the confidence and cooperation of participants, the general public, and other employees in recreational activities.
  • Plan, assign, and coordinate the work of contract and temporary employees in recreational activities.
  • Possess sufficient physical strength and agility to safely perform all essential job functions, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Work safely with hazardous chemicals, including household cleaning and maintenance chemicals, and outdoors under varying environmental conditions.
  • Work outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, when required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in leading and monitoring summer camp activities and functions for children ages 5 through 18.
  • Assist with developing and implementing summer camp activities and programs.
  • Develop and teach educational programs for various age groups at the assigned facility.
  • Care for the children and adults in the assigned recreation programs.
  • Enforce safety and operating procedures, including health, safety, and building codes, by informing the general public and participants.
  • Render cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid according to the level of training in the event of an injury, report injuries to the supervisor or designee, and complete accident reports as required by policy.
  • Distribute and collect equipment for games and activities.
  • Assist in instructing various recreation programs.
  • Ensure equipment and materials are clean, safe, and in proper working condition, and report damaged or unsafe equipment or required maintenance to the supervisor or designee.
  • Perform related clerical work, including copying, answering telephones, providing information on center activities, and recording attendance.
  • Attend work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Supervise and monitor contracted workers or temporary employees when assigned.
  • Transport children or staff when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
