Requirements
  • Specialized or technical training, with combined experience and education accepted as a substitute for the minimum education requirement.
  • Six to twelve months of experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic laws, refrigerator cycles, electricity principles, test and detection instruments, hand and power tools, alternating and direct currents, wood finishing, wiring, painting, construction, and plumbing.
  • Ability to present oneself professionally in a higher education environment.
  • A valid California driver's license is required, and participation in the Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice System is required; a Department of Motor Vehicles record will be required as a final condition of employment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide customer service to students, faculty, staff, and external customers by meeting customer needs, offering options, resolving problems, following up with customers, and ensuring full customer satisfaction.
  • Perform ongoing preventive maintenance for appliances, including air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, and dishwashers.
  • Troubleshoot and repair or replace appliance parts and perform repairs on commercial kitchen equipment, including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, dish machine conveyor belts, slicers, dishwashers, and electric ranges.
  • Maintain appliance part inventory.
  • Build interior walls; fabricate cabinets, drawers, and screens; assemble furniture; repair or replace closet doors, drawers, non-fire-rated doors, door locks, closers, hinges, tiles, and bathroom fixtures; and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Install safety restraints on cabinets and furniture; patch and stretch carpet; replace broken windows and ceiling tiles; and perform caulking.
  • Repair or replace light bulbs, ballasts, switches, plugs, and light fixtures; maintain room wiring systems and emergency exit signs; adjust timers; test and replace smoke detectors and emergency lights; secure electrical wires; and repair vacuum cleaners.
  • Prepare walls for painting, patch holes, replace drywall, paint, stain and refinish woodwork such as wall paneling and furniture, assist with roof repairs, repair or replace tiles, and perform caulking.
  • Repair or replace plumbing fixtures and hardware, including faucets, shower fixtures, water fountains, garbage disposals, sinks, and toilets.
  • Unclog sluggish or stopped drains, including main drains, and perform minor repairs on water heaters.
  • Perform light welding and light vehicle maintenance.
  • Perform utility work, including installing or removing posts and signs, patching street holes with asphalt, and repairing gates.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two to three years of experience in appliance repair, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, outlet repair, and/or electrical work.
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning certification.
  • Experience supporting a hospitality, restaurant, or retail department.
  • Experience troubleshooting and performing basic repairs, such as carpentry, and painting maintenance.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to train students, temporary workers, and/or resource workers.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures and precautions.
  • A clean Department of Motor Vehicles record.
