About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years of experience in hands-on production environments.
  • Hands-on supplier industrialization or supplier quality experience with PCBAs, PCB fabrication and assembly, cable assemblies, and wire harnesses, including supplier qualification and production release for flight- or mission-critical or similarly reliability-sensitive hardware.
  • A track record of owning supplier technical performance and delivering measurable improvements such as reduced supplier defect parts per million, improved Cp/Cpk, or shortened qualification lead time.
  • Practical knowledge of electrical assembly manufacturing and testing, including surface-mount technology, through-wave, through-hole repair, conformal coating, cable termination, crimping, overmolding, automated optical inspection, in-circuit testing, functional testing, and fixture design for volume production.
  • Familiarity with inspection and quality tools including First Article Inspection, Production Part Approval Process, Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, control plans, gauge repeatability and reproducibility, process capability studies, Statistical Process Control, and structured problem solving using 8D and 5-Why.
  • Ability to author and review manufacturing data packages and acceptance criteria.
  • Ability to read and drive changes to schematics, PCB and PCBA fabrication and assembly drawings, bills of materials, and supplier documentation.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to supplier and Zipline sites approximately 30–50% of the time and perform hands-on supplier engineering work onsite.
  • Strong technical judgment, decisiveness, authoritative written and verbal communication with suppliers and senior stakeholders, and ownership of issues through resolution.
Responsibilities
  • Act as the single technical owner for assigned electrical parts and supplier relationships, including PCBAs, cables, harnesses, and connectors, across prototype, qualification, and volume production.
  • Own technical decisions, risk acceptance, and supplier technical performance metrics.
  • Define and enforce part-specific qualification criteria, inspection plans, control plans, acceptance criteria, and manufacturing data packages required for production release and flight qualification.
  • Approve technical evidence before production sign-off.
  • Drive supplier selection and capability assessments, including onsite audits, capability-gap remediation, process-flow validation, and production-readiness reviews at supplier sites and Zipline build and test sites.
  • Develop and validate manufacturing and test processes with suppliers, including process routings, work instructions, automated optical inspection, in-circuit testing, functional-test strategies, and inline and outgoing sampling schemes.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and corrective actions for supplier defects using 8D, Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, and Statistical Process Control.
  • Own the containment-to-permanent-fix lifecycle and verify supplier corrective actions at the source.
  • Define and track supplier performance metrics including parts per million, yield, process capability Cp/Cpk, and on-time delivery percentage, as well as customer-impact key performance indicators tied to flight readiness and program schedule.
  • Escalate and drive cross-functional remediation when metrics exceed thresholds.
  • Partner daily with Design Engineering to improve manufacturability and testability, issue engineering changes, and close deviation reviews with traceable dispositioning.
  • Manage multiple concurrent supplier industrialization projects and maintain technical records, risk logs, decision points, and open-action cadence to meet program delivery milestones.
  • Travel routinely to supplier locations and Zipline sites to lead onboarding, qualification builds, failure investigations, and continuous-improvement activities.
  • Prepare and present technical status and risk assessments to program leads and stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Altium.

About the company

Zipline builds and operates autonomous drone delivery networks for retailers, restaurants and healthcare systems that need to move products without road traffic. Its electric aircraft carry food, prescriptions and other supplies from partner sites or distribution hubs to customers and health facilities. The company combines aircraft, charging equipment and delivery software with flight operations, so partners buy a logistics service rather than manage their own drones. Merchants use its ordering and tracking tools to reach customers, while governments and health systems contract for medical supply delivery. Zipline was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Growth teams have fresh funding: Zipline raised over $600 million in January 2026 to expand delivery operations.
  • Consumer distribution is widening: Zipline announced Uber Eats integration in August 2026, with first deliveries planned later that year.
  • Operations extend beyond pilots: Zipline reported over 2.7 million completed deliveries across four continents in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New Texas scale is pending: Zipline's September 2026 five-metro proposal remains under FAA environmental review.
  • Bulk deliveries face a weight ceiling: Zipline's proposed Texas P2 aircraft have an eight-pound payload limit.
  • Field testing disrupts regular hours: Zipline's Esparto operator posting requires nights, weekends and occasional regional travel.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Its delivery pod steers itself: Zipline lowers an autonomous robot on a tether while the larger aircraft stays overhead.
  • Different docks share capacity: Zipline's P2 aircraft fly between docks and recharge before taking the next delivery.
  • Public health is a core customer: Zipline runs Rwanda's national blood-delivery network alongside its US consumer service.

Zipline secures 8-year Côte d'Ivoire deal to serve 12M people with drone delivery

US drone logistics company Zipline will expand operations in Côte d'Ivoire, building nine additional facilities to complement its existing site operational since 2023. The expansion aims to serve 12 million people, roughly a third of the Ivorian population, over the next eight years. During its three-year pilot programme, Zipline delivered nearly 4 million medical products — primarily vaccines and blood — to more than 200 healthcare centres in a region northwest of Abidjan. The Ivorian government will cover operating costs including pharmacy-grade warehousing, cold chain management, digital tracking, and delivery for eight years. Zipline expects the government to achieve a three-fold return on its investment, though the company declined to disclose the exact financial terms. The deal represents growing African government adoption of drone technology for delivering social services to hard-to-reach areas.
