About the company

Nextdoor runs a neighborhood social network where members sign up with their real names and verified home addresses, so the posts they see come from people who live nearby. Neighbors use it to ask for help, recommend local businesses, organize events and groups, and sell or give away belongings through its For Sale and Free marketplace. The app also sends real-time alerts about local safety problems, and its Ask feature uses AI to pull together what neighbors have said about a local service. Nextdoor makes money from advertising, which businesses ranging from local shops to global brands buy through a self-serve tool or its sales team. Nextdoor launched in 2011 and is based in San Francisco.

Follow these three hard-won lessons to scale your company without losing control.

Follow these three hard-won lessons to scale your company without losing control. October 21, 2026 Leaderss often chase fast growth, but the demands - and the dilution - that can come with that growth can create a new set of challenges. At the 2026 Inc. 5000 Conference & Gala, Nirav Tolia, co-founder and CEO of the San Francisco-based neighborhood network Nextdoor, and Anne Fulenwider, co-founder and co-CEO of the New York City-based women's digital health company Alloy Health, reflected on their own early growing pains. For Tolia, it was Nextdoor's big moment: being featured in ABC's 20/20, only for their service to shut down in seconds at a critical moment of visibility, not to be restored for 10 hours. For Fulenwider, it was the moment when a vendor she relied on for her growing trove of customer data went belly up, forcing her engineers to scramble to build a backend platform of their own in weeks. Nextdoor Launches Neighborhood data engine for ad targeting.

Nextdoor Launches Neighborhood data engine for ad targeting. Nextdoor Launches Neighborhood Intelligence Location-based advertising is moving beyond broad geographic segments as marketers seek more granular signals for audience targeting, creative decisions and measurement. ZIP codes remain common planning units, but they can encompass multiple communities with different demographics, consumer needs, businesses and local conditions. Nextdoor is addressing that gap with Neighborhood Intelligence, a proprietary data engine designed to help advertisers target, message and measure audiences at the neighborhood level rather than relying solely on ZIP codes. The product is built on Nextdoor's neighborhood graph, which the company says is based on verified users associated with real addresses and includes boundaries for 350,000 neighborhoods worldwide. The system combines this geographic foundation with AI-powered analysis of local signals. Technology and functionality. Neighborhood Intelligence combines three signal layers. The Neighbor layer uses information such as recommendations, interests and post engagement. The Home layer incorporates mover data, household composition and other home-related signals. The Neighborhood layer adds contextual information including local business activity, weather and community conversations. Together, these signals are designed to give advertisers greater geographic context when determining which audiences to reach and how to tailor creative. Nextdoor says that, in ZIP codes where it has neighborhood coverage, there are an average of 12 distinct neighborhoods per ZIP code. That creates a more granular targeting structure than treating an entire ZIP code as a single audience. For advertisers, the technology could be particularly relevant to campaigns where local context influences purchase intent, including home services, retail, automotive, restaurants and other geographically sensitive categories. The announcement does not claim that Neighborhood Intelligence is limited to those verticals. Advertiser and agency impact. The platform gives brands an additional data layer that can complement existing audience targeting rather than requiring marketers to abandon established media-planning strategies. Agencies could use neighborhood-level signals to distinguish audiences within the same ZIP code and potentially align messaging with local conditions, household characteristics or community interests. Nextdoor also reports results from local-market testing conducted between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026. Pilot campaigns using Neighborhood Intelligence tactics produced a 1.28x lift in brand awareness, 1.16x lift in ad recall and 1.28x lift in brand favorability compared with previous strategies relying on ZIP-code targeting. These are company-reported results rather than independent industry benchmarks, so their applicability across advertisers and markets remains to be established. Strategic outlook. Neighborhood Intelligence reflects a broader shift toward contextualized audience data as advertisers look for alternatives to increasingly broad geographic segmentation. The combination of verified location information, household signals and real-time local context also creates a potential bridge between audience targeting and creative personalization. For programmatic buyers, more granular supply and audience signals can become useful only when they are available at sufficient scale and can be activated and measured consistently. Nextdoor's emphasis on its neighborhood graph is therefore strategically important. The value proposition is not simply smaller geographic targeting areas, but the combination of geographic boundaries with community-level behavioral and contextual signals. Privacy, data governance and signal quality will remain important considerations as advertisers increase their reliance on granular location and household data. Top insights. * Neighborhood targeting: Advertisers can target beyond conventional ZIP-code segmentation. * Three signal layers: Neighbor, Home and Neighborhood data inform audience and creative decisions. * 350,000 neighborhoods: Nextdoor says its graph covers 350,000 real-world neighborhoods. * 12x granularity: The company reports roughly 12 times greater geographic granularity than ZIP-code targeting where coverage exists. * Campaign lift: Company testing reported improvements across awareness, recall and favorability.

Nextdoor launches Neighborhood Intelligence tool to help advertisers target 350,000 mapped communities

Nextdoor has launched Neighborhood Intelligence, a new advertising tool that maps 350,000 individual neighbourhoods to help marketers target ads based on local conversations. The hyperlocal social network's "neighbourhood graph" allows brands to see how different communities discuss their products and identify areas with similar characteristics to their best-performing locations. CEO Nirav Tolia said the tool helps businesses whose sales vary by location, such as car dealerships and restaurant chains, target spending more precisely than competitors like Meta or Google can offer. Whilst rival platforms provide general sentiment data, Nextdoor claims it uniquely pinpoints geographic locations of consumer conversations. The company grew revenue 15% to $75 million in its most recent quarter ending June. Nextdoor initially focuses on using the graph for ads on its own platform but may extend it elsewhere.

Why authentic content is becoming your best search visibility strategy.

Why authentic content is becoming your best search visibility strategy. Google just rolled out another spam update aimed at AI-generated and mass-produced content. Nextdoor just rolled out verified business pages built to be a lot harder to fake than your typical review platform. Two different companies, two different products, but they're both pointing at the same thing: the platforms your customers use every day are getting better at telling the difference between businesses that are genuinely good and businesses that are just gaming the system. If your content and your online presence are actually real, that's very good news. Here's why. What "good content" Actually means right now. Google's latest update specifically targets what it calls "scaled content abuse" - sites mass-producing low-value pages, often combining programmatic templates with AI-generated text and little to no human oversight. It's also cracking down on thin affiliate content and sites that use shady redirects. Notably, this doesn't just affect traditional search rankings - it can knock a site out of AI Overviews and AI Mode results too. Translation: content written to please an algorithm, with no real person or expertise behind it, is losing ground. Content that reflects actual knowledge of your business, your customers, and your industry is gaining it. What this actually looks like for a local business. For a local business, "good content" was never about keyword-stuffing a page or publishing a blog post a week just to say you did. It's things like: * A blog post that answers a question your customers actually ask you, written the way you'd actually answer it * An About page that sounds like your business, not a template * Real photos of your team and your work instead of stock images * Service pages that reflect how you really do the job, not generic industry copy None of that is flashy. All of it is exactly what's being rewarded right now - and exactly what a lot of your competitors are skipping in favor of shortcuts. Trulove Webworks go deeper on how to actually write this kind of content in How to Write Content That Actually Sounds Like You. The pattern is bigger than Google. This is really the second time this year Trulove Webworks has watched a major platform tighten the gap between "looks credible" and "is credible." Nextdoor's move is a smaller example of the same idea: its verified business pages are tied to real, verified neighbors rather than anonymous reviews that can be bought or bulk-generated, which makes the recommendations on them mean more than a typical star rating. The bigger trend across every platform. Add it up, and the pattern is clear. Search engines, review platforms, and local apps are all getting better at rewarding authenticity and filtering out manipulation. That's the environment your business is competing in now, whether it's ready or not. Why this matters more than your website alone. Trulove Webworks say this to clients often: your website is rarely the first stop in someone's decision to work with you anymore. The real path usually looks like this - a Google search, a look at your Google Business Profile, a scan of your reviews, maybe a scroll through social media or a neighborhood app, and only then a visit to your website before they pick up the phone. The same question at every stop. At every one of those stops, the question a potential customer is really asking is the same one: can I trust this business enough to contact them? The businesses that answer "yes" consistently are the ones with real, honest content and information everywhere someone might look for it - not just a nice-looking homepage. Trulove Webworks walk through each of those stops, and what to check at each one, in Where Your Customers Are Really Looking: A Local Trust Checklist. A good next step. This is a good week to take an honest look at your content: does it actually sound like you, and does it actually help the people reading it? If you've been leaning on generic copy, outdated pages, or content that was written more for search engines than for people, that's worth fixing before it becomes a bigger gap between you and competitors who are doing it right. Two quick things worth checking today. While you're at it, two small things are worth a quick check too: making sure your Google Business Profile is current, and claiming your Nextdoor Business Page if you haven't. Neither takes long, and both reinforce the same message - a business that shows up as real, current, and genuinely itself, everywhere someone might be looking. Want a second set of eyes on your content? Trulove Webworks'll take an honest look at your website, your Google Business Profile, and your Nextdoor presence, and tell you exactly what's helping you and what's quietly working against you - it's the kind of review Trulove Webworks build into its Stress-Free Website Process. Nextdoor prioritises real neighbour reviews over AI algorithms with new Local Faves hub

Nextdoor has launched Local Faves, a new hub featuring recommendations from real neighbours instead of AI algorithm-generated content. CEO Nirav Tolia emphasises that the platform won't have fake reviews, as all recommendations come from verified neighbours. Local business recommendations comprise 30% of Nextdoor's content and are central to the company's turnaround strategy. Tolia notes that over 50% of internet users have encountered fake reviews online. The company is integrating AI throughout its platform to improve efficiency and user experience. AI helps neighbours answer questions faster and summarises responses, but the underlying recommendations still come from real people. Tolia believes this human-verified approach differentiates Nextdoor from other platforms as synthetic content increasingly floods the internet.
