Shell greenlights $730M LNG Canada Phase 2, doubling Kitimat capacity to 28 mtpa

Shell Canada Energy has approved the expansion of its LNG Canada facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, doubling production capacity from 14 million tonnes per annum to 28 mtpa. Shell holds a 40% stake in the joint venture, with partners including Malaysia's PETRONAS, China's PetroChina, Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, and South Korea's Korea Gas Corporation. The Phase 2 expansion will add two LNG processing trains, storage facilities, and expanded pipeline capacity through the 670-kilometre Coastal GasLink pipeline. Commercial operations are expected to begin in the early 2030s. At peak construction, the project will require up to 4,000 jobs in Kitimat and approximately 2,100 along the pipeline. LNG Canada and the governments of British Columbia and Canada estimate Phase 2 could generate more than $50 billion in government revenues over the project's life.

Shell and Star Bulk profit as refining shutdowns and longer shipping routes tighten global supply

Louis Navellier has identified two stocks poised to benefit from global supply constraints: Star Bulk Carriers Corp. and Shell plc. Star Bulk Carriers is capitalising on elevated dry bulk shipping rates driven by longer, riskier routes. The company operates 138 vessels and earned $1.21 per share in Q2, up 1,000% year-over-year, beating analyst estimates by 30.1%. Analysts expect Q3 earnings to grow 307% year-over-year. Shell is benefiting from refining shortages after damage to approximately 20 Middle Eastern refineries reduced global capacity by 3.52 million barrels per day. US diesel inventories hit their lowest September level since 1982. Shell's Q2 adjusted earnings climbed 131% year-over-year to $9.84 billion, marking its best quarterly profit in four years.

Shell shares climb 2.6% as Asian LNG prices triple to $30/MMBtu amid 36M tonne supply gap

Shell's shares climbed 2.5% to $98.945 on Tuesday as Asian spot LNG prices nearly tripled to around $30 per million British thermal units. The surge follows the disappearance of roughly 36 million tonnes of Middle Eastern LNG supply from the market this year, according to Reuters. The tight market is forcing price-sensitive buyers in China, India and Pakistan to shift towards coal and oil. However, current pricing levels risk destroying demand that producers need for long-term recovery. Shell's second-quarter results showed 18 million tonnes of LNG sales, $9.8 billion of adjusted earnings and $17.5 billion of free cash flow. The company's share price now trades 19.54% above its GuruFocus valuation estimate of $82.77, suggesting investors are already pricing in supply constraints.
