Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive internal or external audit experience is required, including at least two years in a management or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing risk-based audit plans is required.
  • Experience presenting to Boards, Audit Committees, and senior leadership is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of internal audit standards, practices, and methodologies, including Institute of Internal Auditors Standards, COSO, and COBIT, is required.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are required to evaluate complex risks and controls.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to convey complex findings clearly to diverse audiences, including senior and board members.
  • Proficiency in audit management software and data analytics tools is required.
  • Strong project management skills are required to manage multiple concurrent engagements and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills are required to motivate, develop, and retain professional staff.
  • A high degree of integrity, independence, and professional objectivity is required.
  • Certified Internal Auditor certification is required or must be obtained within 24 months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and continually refine a comprehensive, risk-based annual internal audit plan aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives and risk profile.
  • Lead and manage all internal audit engagements, including operational, financial, compliance, and information technology audits, from planning through reporting and follow-up.
  • Report audit findings, recommendations, and management action plans to senior leadership and the Board Compliance and Audit Committee, and present quarterly to the Compliance Committee.
  • Build and maintain an effective internal audit team through hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Oversee the quality assurance and improvement program to ensure conformance with the Institute of Internal Auditors International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
  • Support the Enterprise Risk Management program in developing a holistic view of critical risks to the organization’s mission and managing those risks to an appropriate level of risk tolerance.
  • Provide advisory services on major initiatives, new programs, process improvements, and system implementations to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
  • Coordinate with Compliance, Legal, and Human Resources as appropriate, including during investigations of suspected fraud, waste, or abuse.
  • Monitor and track the status of management corrective action plans in response to audit findings, and escalate unresolved or high-risk items.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant healthcare regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and emerging risks.
  • Support oversight of the internal audit budget and resources, including the use of co-sourcing arrangements with external audit firms as needed.
  • Champion a culture of accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct throughout the organization.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A graduate degree such as a Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Administration, or Master of Public Administration is preferred.
  • Healthcare industry experience is strongly preferred, including familiarity with hospital and physician office operations, the healthcare regulatory environment, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Joint Commission, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and healthcare-specific financial reporting.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning systems such as Epic and Workday is preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant, Certified Information Systems Auditor, or Certified Healthcare Internal Auditor certification is preferred.
