About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering is required.
  • Experience in mechanical design and structural analysis of reactor core components or internals.
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis and structural/vibration tools such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of flow-induced vibration, fatigue, and dynamic/shock loading analysis.
  • Strong grounding in solid mechanics, materials behavior, and structural dynamics.
Responsibilities
  • Design and analyze core mechanical components and internals for structural integrity, fatigue, and wear across operating, transient, and accident conditions, including conditions unique to the maritime domain.
  • Evaluate flow-induced vibration of fuel assemblies, control elements, and internals, and develop design features to mitigate wear and dynamic effects in marine operational load profiles.
  • Assess the effects of ship motions and dynamic/shock loading on core mechanical performance and structural margins.
  • Coordinate with thermal-hydraulics, fuels, and structural teams to integrate mechanical design with flow, thermal, and neutronic requirements.
  • Document mechanical analyses, design basis, and qualification results, and support design reviews, testing campaigns, and regulatory documentation.
  • At more senior levels, lead system-level decisions on core mechanical architecture and material selection.
  • At more senior levels, mentor newer engineers and review their analyses.
  • At more senior levels, interface directly with the regulatory team on NRC-facing documentation packages.
  • At more senior levels, drive cross-team trade studies across thermal-hydraulics, fuels, and structural domains.
Desired Qualifications
  • Background in naval architecture, marine engineering, or offshore energy.
  • Experience with PWRs, first-of-a-kind reactor designs, or small modular reactor (SMR) programs.
  • An advanced degree in mechanical or nuclear engineering.

About the company

Ocean Atomics designs, licenses, and assembles standardized nuclear electric power plants for the maritime industry. These plants are built to proprietary nuclear-ready vessel standards and installed on ships, with end-to-end sustainment managed through a planned nuclear lifecycle dockyard. The design repeats a single, standardized plant across vessel types and uses water-cooled reactor technology, with licensed operators trained or created by Ocean Atomics to run them at sea. Its goal is to decarbonize shipping by delivering a practical, scalable maritime nuclear propulsion system and a supporting lifecycle ecosystem.

What believers are saying

  • August 2026 hiring across nuclear, naval architecture, and infrastructure shows active buildout.
  • Ocean Atomics.com updated August 14, 2026, confirms continued product and sustainment development.
  • Maritime decarbonization pressure and IMO 2050 demand favor zero-emission propulsion providers.

What critics are saying

  • NRC licensing remains unresolved; dual-track marine approval slows Ocean Atomics through 2026.
  • Twenty-four August 2026 open roles signal heavy execution load before any vessel deployment.
  • Shipboard nuclear accidents or denial of port access would destroy the business model.

What makes Ocean Atomics unique

  • Ocean Atomics targets civilian shipboard reactors, led by ex-Coast Guard officer William R. Cahill.
  • Its standardized nuclear electric plant and nuclear-ready vessel standards reduce custom integration complexity.
  • Chief nuclear officer Nick Touran gives credible reactor expertise amid maritime engineering hires.
