Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • A minimum of four years as a collegiate cross country and track and field student-athlete and/or coach is required.
  • A minimum of two years of collegiate track and field coaching is required.
  • Demonstrated successful recruiting and retention of cross-country and track and field student-athletes is required.
  • Knowledge of admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations.
  • Proven organizational skills and commitment to student growth and academic achievement.
  • Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset, such as NSCA-CSCS.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and a commitment to teamwork.
  • Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver's license are required.
  • First Aid, AED, and CPR certification is required by the start date.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and on hilly or uneven campus surfaces.
  • Ability to comply with required safety training, rules, regulations, and protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the head coach with the organization and management of the NCAA Division III men's and women's cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field programs.
  • Teach and coach student-athletes for successful competition.
  • Mentor and engage student-athletes to support athletic, academic, and personal success.
  • Assist in developing strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport.
  • Assist in preparing, implementing, and evaluating practice and competition plans.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a team philosophy aligned with the university and athletic department missions.
  • Direct student-athletes, part-time assistant coaches, and support staff in conduct that reflects positively on the team and university.
  • Implement a recruiting plan under the direction of the head coach.
  • Cultivate a recruiting network and maintain the department's recruiting contact management system.
  • Recruit student-athletes who align with Alfred University's academic profile.
  • Maintain communication with other university coaches regarding shared prospects.
  • Assist the head coach in meeting recruiting goals.
  • Maintain active membership in professional sport organizations and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Promote the sport in area communities and establish positive relationships with youth groups, civic organizations, and media.
  • Comply with institutional and departmental policies.
  • Supervise part-time assistant coaching staff.
  • Work collaboratively with department staff.
  • Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities.
  • Collaborate with advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities.
  • Maintain professional coach-athlete relationships.
  • Develop positive relationships with alumni and parents of current and prospective student-athletes.
  • Serve on a departmental operational team.
  • Coach strength and conditioning within the athletics department if the successful candidate has NSCA-CSCS certification.
  • Assist with department initiatives and represent the department on campus committees.
  • Support initiatives that create intersections and mentoring opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and support access to the university experience.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and obtain Safety Data Sheet information for workplace hazards when required.
  • Participate in assigned training, including safety training, and comply with safety protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred, with preference in education, health science, sport management, or a related field.
  • Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset, such as NSCA-CSCS.
  • Demonstrated successful recruiting and retention of cross-country and track and field student-athletes, preferably at NCAA Division III.
  • A minimum of four years as a collegiate cross country and track and field student-athlete and/or coach is required, with a minimum of two years of collegiate track and field coaching required.
