Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is required.
  • The employee must be a past or present consumer of mental health and/or chemical addiction services and be able to relate to others currently using those services.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with culturally diverse guests, staff, and community representatives are required.
  • The ability to work independently is required.
  • Basic computer literacy is required, including performing basic online searches, using email, and making simple document edits.
  • Basic Microsoft Word skills are required, including producing basic business letters and simple tables and charts, checking spelling, setting tabs, changing page orientation, sorting, saving and opening files, and organizing electronic files.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply person-centered practices are required.
  • The employee must obtain provisional and/or permanent peer certification within 18 months of hire if not currently certified.
Responsibilities
  • Assist guests in articulating recovery goals and identifying barriers to community integration.
  • Provide appropriate interventions based on guests' goals and document guest progress.
  • Engage and communicate effectively with program staff to integrate guest services.
  • Maintain the safety of guests and the facility through regular environmental monitoring and crisis response.
  • Respond to warm line calls and facilitate timely access to services.
  • Conduct check-in and check-out activities and facilitate groups and activities.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to identify and maintain resources.
  • Provide outreach to guests to encourage participation and support.
  • Assist guests in obtaining community supports aligned with their recovery goals.
  • Provide role modeling, coping techniques, and empowerment skills training to guests.
  • Maintain documentation standards required by funders and East House policies and procedures.
  • Follow applicable policies, federal and state laws, and East House compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Ethics, Compliance & Quality to address non-compliance and document corrective actions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a peer role is preferred.
  • Peer certification (provisional and/or permanent) is preferred.
