Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • One year of experience working in adult corrections or with youth in detention, probation or parole, residential care, recreation, education, community center, institutional, counseling, or a related setting is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete the two-week Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Corrections Officer Academy within the first six months after appointment or during the probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Food Worker Card.
  • First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and automated external defibrillator certification are required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old at the time of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, polygraph test, physical examination, physical abilities test, and drug test.
  • Knowledge of group and individual behavior patterns of youth and the juvenile justice system.
  • Skill in basic computer word processing, data entry, group dynamics, diplomacy, persuasion, and clear, concise, accurate documentation.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and positively enforce facility rules and regulations.
  • Ability to intervene in crisis situations and use physical restraint to restore order and calm residents.
  • Ability to communicate orally with youth and parents in a manner that gains their respect and confidence.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the criminal justice system, social and community agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to follow established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to Juvenile Court and County policies and procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to shift work, including day, evening, and weekend hours.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a positive role model for juveniles detained at the center.
  • Lead group and individual discussions, teach classes encouraging law-abiding behavior, report on youth behavior, and coordinate with probation, medical, treatment, teaching, community, court, prosecutorial, and defense personnel.
  • Conduct pat-down and strip searches and remove personal property.
  • Review social files, gather information to establish detention admission or release criteria, and complete appropriate forms.
  • Contact parents, guardians, caseworkers, probation counselors, or parole counselors and consult with supervisors about releases and shift problems.
  • Provide orientation on facility rules and regulations.
  • Provide for juveniles' health, safety, recreation, and care needs in the detention facility.
  • Check the security of the building, doors, and windows and maintain the safety and security of detained juveniles.
  • Oversee youth movement for meals, showers, room cleanup, school, physical training, and recreation while maintaining safety and security for youth and staff.
  • Provide positive individual and group supervision of juveniles participating in programming and attend to their needs.
  • Escort youth to and from court while providing security in court.
  • Follow medical orders when dispensing medication to juvenile offenders.
  • Speak with and de-escalate youth in crisis, intervene in emergencies or crises, and use physical restraint when necessary to restore order.
  • Maintain and submit written documentation of incidents concerning youth.
  • Perform janitorial, maintenance, and laundry duties related to maintaining the facility.
  • Perform admission and release functions and maintain records.
  • Serve and occasionally prepare meals and order kitchen food and cleaning supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
