About the company

Appian builds software that banks, insurers, government agencies and other heavily regulated organizations use to automate complex work, such as onboarding clients, settling claims and reviewing grant applications. In 2001, it built Army Knowledge Online, a web portal for US Army personnel that was then considered the world's largest intranet. Customers' developers build apps by connecting visual building blocks instead of writing much code, while a data fabric links records across their existing systems without migrating them and AI agents read documents and handle routine steps. Customers pay subscription fees, mostly for software that Appian runs in its own cloud. Appian was founded in 1999 and is based in McLean, Virginia.

What believers are saying

  • Demand is beating forecasts: cloud subscription sales rose 23% in the June 2026 quarter, and Appian raised its 2026 outlook.
  • Stock grants outpaced its top rival's: Appian shares rose 13% from January to October 2026, while Pegasystems fell 40%.
  • AI is lifting spending: nearly 40% of Appian customers had bought its pricier AI-inclusive license tiers by May 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Profit is still thin: Appian earned just $1.2 million in 2025 and lost $11.8 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Its $2 billion win is on hold: Virginia's top court backed a new trial against rival Pegasystems in January 2026.
  • Expect office work most days: 39 of Appian's 79 headquarters job posts require four or five days a week.

What makes Appian unique

  • Its founders still run it: all four 1999 co-founders hold top jobs, including CEO Matt Calkins and CTO Michael Beckley.
  • Washington is a quarter of its business: US federal agencies supplied 25.3% of 2025 revenue, up from 21.3% in 2023.
  • Many staff build apps for clients: Appian's own consultants earned 22% of revenue in the June 2026 quarter.

Appian Defense Cloud wins IL5 authorisation from US Department of War

Appian said its Appian Defense Cloud (ADC) has received Impact Level 5 (IL5) Provisional Authorization to Operate from the US Department of War (DOW). The approval lets DOW agencies run mission-critical workloads on the platform, which can store and process the department's most sensitive unclassified data. Appian's defense deployments grew almost fourfold over the past 12 months. The platform now serves more than 2,000,000 active DOW and intelligence community users and runs on more than 100 mission platforms. Among its Army programs is the Total Army Combat and Training Munitions Information System, built in 110 days from contract award. It supports more than 10,000 active users worldwide. "This marks a significant milestone for Appian," said Michael Beckley, chief technology officer.

Appian delivers US Army munitions system in 110 days for 10,000+ users

Appian (NASDAQ: APPN) said the US Army has fielded the first release of the Total Army Combat and Training Munitions Information System (TACTMIS). The team built it in 110 days from contract award, using Appian Defense Cloud. The system serves more than 10,000 global users. It replaces disconnected emails, spreadsheets, and legacy workflows with one cloud platform for planning, managing, and reporting munitions. TACTMIS also includes embedded agents that search records across 14 operational grids, answer policy questions, and summarise forecast data. Appian said agent use grew over 25-fold in the first three months. A planned classified increment would support near-real-time combat munitions reporting.

Appian and PSI CRO launch AI tool to automate clinical trial site selection

Appian and PSI CRO have launched their first joint AI-powered solution, which automates clinical trial site identification and selection across therapeutic areas, indications, and geographies. The companies announced it in Berlin on October 28, 2026. The tool brings previously manual, decentralised steps into one digital process, from project initiation through site selection. It connects people, data, systems, and AI in a single workflow, and integrates with PSI's core systems and data warehouse. PSI aims to cut non-enrolling sites and patient enrollment delays. "PSI is known for our ability to deliver complex clinical trials on time," said Kirill Soldatov, head of process improvement at PSI. The companies will now explore more uses of AI-powered process orchestration across the clinical trial lifecycle, with the goal of shortening studies and making them more predictable.
