About the Job

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Significant experience writing, troubleshooting, and running PC-DMIS inspection programs is required.
  • Experience using high-precision measurement equipment, including coordinate measurement machines, laser trackers, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers, and performing computerized spatial analysis is required.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing trades, including industrial and commercial manufacturing processes, is required to contribute to engineering design and development.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data from test samples and fabrication mockups and apply the data to future high-cost components and models is required.
  • Experience inspecting and dimensionally verifying components and models against drawings, specifications, and control documents is required.
  • Experience generating and delivering measurement reports according to customer specifications is required.
  • A thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices, including NIST, is required.
  • Ability to read and work from highly detailed drawings and specifications is required.
  • The role requires working in office, industrial, construction, and test-facility settings; standing, kneeling, or sitting in awkward positions; lifting up to 80 pounds; and working from ladders, scaffolds, trenches, and hard-to-reach areas.
  • The role requires working inside and outside in cold weather, hot sun, areas where ventilation or respirators may be necessary, and environments involving noise, electrical shock, wet surfaces, climbing, oils, solvents, and occasional confined-space exposure.
  • The employee must follow safety practices, inspect tools and equipment, and ensure equipment capacities are not exceeded and tools remain in safe working condition.

Responsibilities

  • Use coordinate measurement machines, laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers to perform high-precision measurements and computerized spatial analysis.
  • Calibrate equipment, measure item geometry and spatial relationships, and perform dimension and tolerance analysis to determine accuracy.
  • Restrain items before measurement to prevent hog and sag deformation.
  • Provide a Tolerance Measurement Study after completing measurements.
  • Perform preventive and routine maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment and issue calibration certificates.
  • Prepare measurement reports according to customer specifications and determine whether first-article parts are acceptable.
  • Implement innovative practices, such as improved reporting templates or formats, to document, report, and track precision measurement activities.
  • Use PC-DMIS as the primary metrology software and PolyWorks as a secondary tool to inspect high-tolerance finished components with minimal fixturing during first-article inspections.
  • Use PC-DMIS and PolyWorks to advise shop management, supervisors, and planners during planning and costing on inspection difficulty, complexity, and potential issues.
  • Analyze and diagnose complex inspection problems, use PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, or Spatial Analyzer to determine root causes, and develop methods and processes to reduce or eliminate recurrence.
  • Use PC-DMIS or PolyWorks to perform laser-tracker measurements in accordance with Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard operating practices.
  • Follow Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices.
  • Design specialized tooling fixtures to support production of complex machined components.
  • Apply engineering knowledge in structural design, weld design, materials applications, and prototype design.
  • Interpret complex engineered drawings, sketches, and verbal communications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of machining and sheet-metal processes.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA, Navy, or other military fabrication standards.
  • Experience with PolyWorks and Spatial Analyzer.
