Homebuilding stocks are feeling the bite of higher mortgage rates.

Homebuilding stocks are feeling the bite of higher mortgage rates. September is shaping up to be a bruising month for homebuilders and home improvement stores. A rapid run-up in mortgage rates to around 7.5% and slumping revenues at Lennar (LEN) and KB Home (KBH) have pushed the S&P 500 Homebuilding Index down 3.2% so far this month as homebuilders contend with high costs and weak consumer demand. Retail giants like Home Depot (HD) and Lowe's (LOW) are faring even worse as building activity slows and renovators focus on smaller, cheaper products. Home Depot stock slid 11% this month, while Lowe's stock dropped 8.5%. NYSE - Nasdaq Real Time Price - USD The Home Depot, inc. (HD). 291.33 -1.87 (-0.64%) As of 2:10:00 p.m. EDT. Market Open. Mortgage rates, meanwhile, have surged more than half a point in two weeks. After rates briefly fell below 6% early this year, the war in Iran and accompanying inflation sent them higher, and they have remained elevated, dampening sales and keeping homebuyers sidelined. On Monday, the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate loan touched 7.5% for the first time since April of 2024. Building Homes for Heroes and KB Home welcome Navy veteran home in Arizona.

Building Homes for Heroes and KB Home welcome Navy veteran home in Arizona. Building Homes for Heroes and KB Home welcome Navy veteran home in Arizona september 28, 2026. It was a special day in Goodyear, Arizona, as U.S. Navy veteran Cassandra Johnson and her family received a brand new, mortgage-free home, kicking off an exciting new partnership between Building Homes for Heroes and KB Home! The memorable celebration included a beautiful procession through the community and a special jump by the Patriot Parachute Team. Surrounded by her family, friends, supporters, KB Home team members and members of the local community, Cassandra and her family were welcomed to the community in patriotic fashion and stepped inside the place they can now call home. Cassandra served its country for 17 years in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves, including demanding tours on aircraft carriers where she supported flight deck and logistics operations. She endured serious injuries and twice narrowly escaped being blown off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. She continues to live with chronic pain, physical limitations and the invisible wounds of her service. Through it all, Cassandra has shown tremendous resilience and is a devoted mother of three, working to build a stable and secure future for her family. The energy-efficient home was made possible by KB Home and more than 40 of its partners, who donated their time, labor, materials, furnishings and landscaping. Nearly 30 Lowe's volunteers also came out the day before the ceremony to help put the finishing touches on the home and get everything ready for Cassandra and her family. It was a wonderful celebration of Cassandra's service and sacrifice, her family, and the start of a partnership that will help Building Homes for Heroes bring brighter futures to even more of its nation's heroes. KB Home purchases property for $5.52 million to develop single-family community near Leesburg.

KB Home purchases property for $5.52 million to develop single-family community near Leesburg. KB Home recently closed on a 71-acre property near Leesburg that is set to rise as a single-family community dubbed Landings at Lake Lucille. Located east of U.S. Highway 27 and south along Dewey Robbins Road, the property was purchased for $5.52 million and is planned to contain 184 homesites. KB Home purchased the property from Lakeco Partners II LTD, a business entity operated by an LLC registered to former Winter Park mayor David Strong. Strong is also the president of a privately-owned real estate investment firm - Strong Properties Inc. - based out of Winter Park. According to KB Home, the community will feature two product lines split between 55-foot and 100-foot lots. On the 55-foot lots, KB Home is planning to build its 40-foot series with square footage ranging from 1707 square feet to 3016 square feet, which will include one- and two-story homes. For the 100-foot lots, KB Home is looking to build its 50-foot series with square footage ranging from 1865 square feet to 2609 square feet, which will include only one-story homes. Pricing for the homes is expected to start "in the mid-$300s", according to KB Home, and a grand opening is projected by April 2027. Amenities for the development are set to include a playground, wetland areas, and walking trails. According to KB Home, the location for Landings at Lake Lucille was chosen due to its "easy access to Florida's Turnpike and the convenient commutes to employment, outdoor activities and attractions." Earlier this month, KB Home paid $4.2 million for about 23 acres in northern Apopka, where it plans to build a 67-home community with prices starting in the high $390,000s to low $400,000s and a grand opening expected in March 2027. Dubbed Everly Estates, the neighborhood will rise at 3100 Ondich Road, on the south side of the road just west of Plymouth Sorrento Road. The property is approximately 1.5 miles north of the Kelly Park Road interchange with State Road 429. A Sept. 1 deed transferred the land from Larry M. Everly Sr. and Corinne F. Everly to KB Home Orlando LLC. Property appraiser records show the Everlys acquired the property in 1996 for $125,000 and transferred it into the family trusts in 2004. The Everly property falls within Apopka's Kelly Park Interchange Mixed-Use district. Homes will range from 1,856 to 3,016 square feet, Fred Wyborski, KB Home's Orlando division president, told GrowthSpotter in an email. Plans also call for a walking trail and a dog park. Earlier this year, KB Home withdrew a petition filed against Lake County for its denial of a proposed 40-acre subdivision in unincorporated Clermont. Despite revised plans from KB Home, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners rejected a settlement agreement in April that would have allowed the homebuilder to move forward with its proposed Crescent Pines development. Located at the corner of Log House Road and Priebe Road near County Road 561, Crescent Pines was planned to rise as a 79-home subdivision. After the project's initial rezoning application was denied during a Nov. 2025 county board meeting, KB Home filed a Request for Relief from the development order, and Lake County responded with a plea to initiate a case with the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings, or DOAH. Lake County Commissioners voted 3-2 to deny the proposed settlement agreement with KB Home in April, citing the project's location next to a county solid waste facility and inconsistencies with land development regulations as justification for denying the agreement. Denial of the settlement agreement moved the legal dispute toward a preliminary hearing with the DOAH before KB Home voluntarily withdrew its petition. According to DOAH documents, the case was dismissed on May 21. Have a tip about Central Florida development? Contact me at [email protected] or 407-754-4980.
