Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Three to five years of security management experience is required, preferably in an educational or campus setting.
  • A valid California Driver’s License is required.
  • Knowledge of California Building Codes and Fire Life Safety Codes is required.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and respond under pressure is required.
  • The ability to organize and prioritize workload is required.
  • The ability to lift up to 10 pounds and to carry, push, pull, climb, kneel, and stoop is required.
  • Computer use and material handling are required.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage security policies, protocols, and procedures in line with best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate security threats and enhance campus safety.
  • Organize training sessions and drills for security staff and the university community on security procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Manage site security, alarm monitoring, and other safety and security service vendors.
  • Collaborate with Facilities and Information Technology on access control, surveillance cameras, and emergency notification systems.
  • Conduct investigations into student, faculty, and staff inquiries, suggestions, and complaints regarding campus security incidents.
  • Maintain records of security-related incidents and prepare reports for university administration and regulatory bodies, including the Annual Clery Report.
  • Follow up on recommendations from insurance carriers or brokers to prevent or minimize losses.
  • Support administration of insurance policies, including processing registrations, tracking exposure data, and reporting information.
  • Assist with development and oversight of the risk management program and related policies, procedures, and plans.
  • Coordinate risk, safety, and insurance programs and services for university properties.
  • Evaluate claims and accidents, analyze claims information, identify hazards and loss trends, and recommend preventive and corrective actions.
  • Assist with administration of the university’s workers’ compensation program and insurance.
  • Investigate and analyze work-related accidents and injuries and monitor and resolve claims with brokers, insurance carriers, and employees.
  • Ensure claims are entered accurately in the Risk Management Program system and prepare reports identifying claim trends.
  • Coordinate with the Office of People and Culture to obtain required records and manage employee return to work.
  • Identify potential areas of risk and implement preventive measures.
  • Create risk management reports and presentations and collaborate with university departments to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate environmental health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist with development and oversight of the safety program.
  • Work with stakeholders to implement health and safety programs.
  • Inspect workplace facilities for fire and life safety hazards and conditions and recommend corrective measures.
  • Perform job safety analyses and recommend safety equipment and safe work procedures.
  • Investigate employee inquiries, suggestions, and complaints regarding workplace health and safety issues.
  • Maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local fire, safety, environmental, and health regulations and procedures.
  • Create environmental health and safety reports and presentations.
  • Develop and manage the Emergency Response Team program.
  • Coordinate emergency response at the Oakland campus and facilitate communication among security personnel, law enforcement, and emergency response teams.
  • Serve as a member of the Crisis Response Team.
  • Assist with development, monitoring, and evaluation of a university-wide Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Ensure university locations have necessary safety equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain relationships with local, state, and federal emergency response agencies and emergency management departments.
  • Travel to other SMU campuses to evaluate safety and security needs and implement measures as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Professional designations or certifications in a related field are highly desirable, such as the ASIS Certified Protection Professional certification.
  • Experience in an educational or campus setting is preferred.
  • The ability to develop strong community relations and build bridges between the campus community and surrounding community is desirable.
  • The ability to work effectively with university culture and sensitivity to diversity issues is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and organizational skills are desirable.
  • A courteous and professional manner is desirable.
