About the company

Micron Technology designs and manufactures memory and storage chips, mainly DRAM and NAND flash, used in data centers, PCs, phones, cars and industrial equipment. It is one of only three companies that make HBM, the stacked high-bandwidth memory placed beside processors in AI servers, and it is the largest memory chipmaker based in the United States. Unlike chip designers that outsource production, Micron runs its own fabs and assembly sites in the United States and across Asia. It earns money by selling chips, memory modules and solid-state drives to cloud providers, device makers and distributors. Micron was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

What believers are saying

  • Demand is surging: in September 2026, Micron reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.19 billion, up from $37.38 billion.
  • Boise is hiring: in August 2026, Micron planned about 3,500 direct jobs at two Idaho fabs opening from 2027.
  • Sales are locked in early: by October 2026, most of Micron's 2027 HBM supply was contracted at higher prices.

What critics are saying

  • Revenue is concentrated: about half of Micron's sales came from its top ten customers in each of three years.
  • Departing engineers face scrutiny: in September 2026, Micron sued rival YMTC for hiring away at least 20 engineers.
  • Boise is feeling the strain: an August 2026 report found the $50 billion Idaho buildout straining local infrastructure.

What makes Micron Technology unique

  • AI memory is a three-player club: only Micron, SK hynix and Samsung make HBM, the stacked memory inside AI servers.
  • It owns its factories: Micron makes chips in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, the U.S., Malaysia, China and India.
  • Data centers drive the business: its two data center units made $34.28 billion of quarterly revenue reported September 2026.

Micron falls 5% to $884.74 as Altman says PC memory belongs in data centres

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman says scarce memory chips belong in data centers, not personal computers. On the Cheeky Pint podcast, published October 29, 2026, he told Stripe co-founder John Collison that personal devices use DRAM about 5% of the time. Micron Technology fell 5.30% on October 30 to close at $884.74, valuing it at about $1.00 trillion. The drop came during a broad pullback in large technology stocks. Altman offered an opinion, not a product plan, contract, or timeline. PC demand is already soft: Microsoft reported a 22% drop in Windows OEM and Devices revenue, and Intel's finance chief expects the slowdown to last through at least the first half of next year. Micron's cloud and data center segments earned more than its mobile and client unit last quarter.

Micron revenue surges 256% to $133B as investor keeps buying despite bearish sentiment

Micron Technology's fiscal 2026 revenue rose 256% to $133.19B, and one investor says he is buying more of the stock. The shares closed at $934.27 on October 29, down 12.27% over the past month. Quarterly revenue grew from $13.64B in fiscal Q1 2026 to $54.23B in Q4. For fiscal Q1 2027, Micron guided to $61.5B in revenue and $38.15 in non-GAAP earnings per share. Micron has 26 Strategic Customer Agreements, with price floors and committed volumes, covering more than 75% of fiscal 2027 shipments. Free cash flow reached $62.31B, and the board approved a 30% dividend increase. The stock trades at about 12 times earnings, against 43 times for NVIDIA. Its gross margin of 87.0% compares with 58.1% at Western Digital. Risks include memory's cyclical nature and $30.71B in capex.

Micron guides Q1 revenue to $60B-$63B, yet shares have fallen 12.3% since

Micron Technology (MU) guided first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $60 billion to $63 billion, about 13% above the $54.2 billion it reported for the fourth quarter. Its shares have still fallen 12.3% since September 30, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.9%. The stock closed at $934.27 on October 29, below its 50-day average of $980.38 but above its 200-day average of $743.87. Most of the drop came between October 9 and October 16, when memory stocks sold off on worries about competition from China's CXMT. Management projected a gross margin of 86.0%, slightly below the 86.8% in the fourth quarter. It expects margins to widen over the rest of fiscal 2027 and tight markets through fiscal 2028. Micron trades at 12.4 times trailing earnings, against 22.8 for the S&P 500. It is expected to report in December 2026.

Micron revenue soars 379% to $54.23B, but peak margins keep the stock at Hold

Micron posted its best quarter ever, with fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion, up 379.3% year over year. Non-GAAP earnings per share of $33.42 beat the $31.35 consensus. Even so, the stock trades at $983.23, 21.6% below its 52-week high of $1,254.61. Analysts at 24/7 Wall St rate it a Hold, warning that 87% gross margins on a cyclical memory stock have historically marked cycle peaks. Over 75% of fiscal 2027 shipments are committed, and 26 strategic customer agreements run through 2030. Micron is co-designing custom high-bandwidth memory chips with NVIDIA. First-quarter guidance calls for revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion. The consensus analyst target of $1,561.91 implies 58.9% upside.

Cramer dislikes that Micron mirrors SK Hynix, which posted record $62.8B quarterly profit

CNBC host Jim Cramer says Micron Technology trades in step with South Korea's SK Hynix, and he dislikes it. Answering a viewer on Mad Money, he said: "I'm hoping the linkage ends one day, but it hasn't yet." The pattern held on October 13, when SK Hynix closed 10.09% lower in Seoul and Micron's US shares sank about 5%. Wall Street had already declined that Monday, so the influence may run both ways. Both firms also sell high-bandwidth memory chips into the same AI-driven demand cycle. On October 28, SK Hynix reported record third-quarter operating profit of 83.33 trillion won ($62.8 billion), up 632% year on year. That beat the 76.96 trillion won consensus. SK Hynix's American depositary receipts debuted on Nasdaq in July, which could deepen the overlap.
