Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A current Certified Nursing Assistant certification issued by the state where services are provided is required, or certification must be obtained within three months of hire.
- For West Virginia, Nurse's Aide Certification through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is required.
- A state criminal background check and federal background check, if applicable, are required for regulated areas.
- Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of the hire date.
- The employee must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Effective reading and comprehension skills are required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Math skills are required for calculation of medications.
- The employee must be able to frequently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel throughout the work shift.
- The employee must be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights with varying amounts of assistance on a regular and recurring basis.
- Hearing within the normal range is required to assess breath sounds, bowel sounds, apical pulse, and monitors.
- Visual acuity within the normal range is required.
- The employee must be able to perform heavy work, exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
- The employee must work weekends, holidays, and all shifts.
Responsibilities
- Provide each assigned patient with routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with the patient's assessment and plan of care, as directed by supervisors.
- Record entries on flow sheets, notes, and charts accurately and descriptively according to policy and procedures.
- Measure and record patients' temperatures, pulses, and respirations according to policy and procedures.
- Provide care for adult and geriatric patients based on their physical, psychosocial, communication, safety, and education needs.
- Use vital-signs instrumentation, K-pad, scales, oxygen tanks, drainage systems and suction, sequential compression devices, continuous passive motion machine, and bladder scanner according to manuals.
- Assist patients with daily hygiene, including dental care, mouth care, bathing, hair care, backrubs, nail care, and shaving.
- Clean and clip patients' nails, except for diabetic patients as restricted by policy and procedure.
- Turn and position bedfast patients every two hours and as needed.
- Assist patients with bowel and bladder functions, including bladder maintenance and bladder or bowel retraining programs.
- Answer call bells promptly according to policy and procedure.
- Assist with care of dying patients and provide postmortem care according to policy and procedure.
- Provide perineal and indwelling catheter care during the shift and as necessary according to policy and procedure.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living with and without adaptive equipment according to therapist or nurse instructions.
- Serve food trays, assist with feeding, record food and fluid intake, and help patients with sight problems identify food arrangements on their trays.
- Serve between-meal and bedtime snacks.
- Lift, turn, move, position, and transport patients into and out of beds, chairs, baths, and wheelchairs using proper body mechanics.
- Report allegations of patient abuse or misappropriation of patient property according to federal requirements and policy and procedure.
- Report all observed accidents and incidents during the shift according to policy and procedure.
- Assist patients with specialized feeding techniques recommended by the speech therapist and in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Assist with ambulation, gait training, and continuous passive motion administration as instructed by the physical therapist.
- Apply orthopedic devices, including AF orthosis, abduction braces, and hinge-joint immobilizers, according to physical therapist instructions.
- Use safety equipment and supplies, including mechanical lifts and Steady devices, when lifting or moving patients who require assistance from more than one person.
Desired Qualifications
- One year of nursing assistant experience in long-term care is preferred.
