'We've gone from zero to hero' - in-house legal teams ramp up AI investment as budgets surge.

'Legal Business has gone from zero to hero' - in-house legal teams ramp up AI investment as budgets surge. A new survey of more than 250 senior in-house lawyers has revealed how corporate legal teams are ramping up their investment in cutting-edge AI technology. This year's Legal Tech Pulse survey, conducted by Legal Business in association with Thomson Reuters, found that almost two-thirds (62%) of in-house legal functions now have an approved budget for legal tech investments over the next 12 months, significantly up from just under half (48%) last year. Further underlining that momentum, 50% of respondents to the survey said that their budget for legal tech investments had increased this year, with only 5% saying their budget had been reduced. With the rapid rise of AI-powered legal tech high on the agenda for the legal profession, around a quarter of respondents to the survey said that they expected to invest more than 50% of their total budget in AI solutions over the next year. The survey canvassed senior in-house lawyers from around the world, with a focus on the UK and Continental Europe. General counsel and heads of legal interviewed for the research talked of the pace of change in recent months and the transformational effect that new tech has had on their operations... Nina Cronstedt, chief legal officer at Stockholm-listed security company Verisure, said her team had witnessed huge change over the past six months, and that new technology had 'truly changed the way we work.' 'There has been a tremendous acceleration in the last six months in terms of what the enterprise AI tools are able to deliver, the breadth of pick-up across the function, and the number of use cases now fully deployed.' EY Luxembourg GC Antonio Benitez-Donoso echoed the sentiment. 'Quoting Hercules - Legal Business has gone from zero to hero,' he said. 'We have gone from small-scale, personal use to automating processes and accelerating contract review.' The responses to the survey also provided hard evidence of how GCs are finding it significantly easier to get support from the wider business for investment in legal tech, with 31% now describing it as 'quite' or 'very' easy to get buy-in - up from under 20% last year. At the same time, resistance is falling, with the proportion of respondents saying securing buy-in is 'not very easy' or 'almost impossible' falling to 21% this year, way down from last year's equivalent figure of 43%. Alex Graydon, associate general counsel at Thomson Reuters, says she is increasingly hearing from peers about how it is becoming easier to secure budget for AI investment. 'The reason for that is because there is an expectation and an understanding that you can't do without AI anymore,' she says. 'It's no longer a "nice to have" - it's an essential business tool.' The Legal Tech Pulse 2026 report, produced by Legal Business in association with Thomson Reuters, offers a comprehensive look at how in-house legal teams are embracing technological change, drawing on a survey of over 250 GC and senior lawyers. The full report will be released later this month - ahead of the release, the findings will be discussed in a dedicated webinar on 24 September. Thomson Reuters reveals hack of court case management system.

Thomson Reuters reveals hack of court case management system. By PYMNTS | September 3, 2026 Media/technology company Thomson Reuters has reported a cybersecurity incident involving its case management system. The incident was detected in 11 U.S. states, as well as in Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands and involved the company's C-Track tool, used for managing court cases, Reuters - itself a division of Thomson Reuters - reported Thursday (Sept. 3). The company confirmed for the news outlet that it had taken containment and security steps and notified affected customers. "There has been no operational disruption to C-Track as a result of this incident," a Thomson Reuters spokesperson said. "Our products and services remain fully operational and are safe to continue to use. Independent cybersecurity experts assisted in the investigation and validated the remediation measures implemented." According to the report, an investigation found that an unauthorized party accessed certain C-Track files in March, and that some court records were "affected," including ones featuring names and personal information. Please add us to your preferred sources list so our news, data and interviews show up in your feed. Thanks! The breach impacted court systems of Alabama, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, New Hampshire, Wyoming and the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with those of the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. A statement from those courts said Thomson Reuters discovered unauthorized activity in one of its cloud environments, and had taken measures to contain the activity, in cooperation with Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General and the courts. "We are advised that Thomson Reuters responded by taking steps to contain the activity, engaging external cybersecurity experts to advise and investigate, notifying law enforcement, and securing the C-Track environment," the statement said. In other cybersecurity news, PYMNTS wrote about the way security needs are shifting at a time when companies have "built interconnected enterprises" but still use incident-response models that "largely assume discrete incidents." While traditional cyber planning centered around infrastructure questions like, "What systems could be compromised," companies have spent years making vast webs of connections, including cloud environments, data platforms and payment systems. "The emerging risk for CFOs and CISOs is therefore not simply a larger attack surface," the report said. "It is a larger obligation surface: every system an autonomous process touches can potentially bring another customer agreement, regulator, insurer, jurisdiction, disclosure requirement or business dependency into an incident. The administrative cost of a cyberattack correlates not only with the amount of data compromised, but with the connectivity of the company experiencing it."

US and canadian court records breached following Thomson Reuters incident.

US and canadian court records breached following Thomson Reuters incident. News 3 September 2026 Deputy Editor, Infosecurity Magazine Thomson Reuters has disclosed a cybersecurity incident impacting its court management software, which has resulted in a breach of sensitive case data across Canada and the US. The company detected activity affecting information held in its C-Track product, a digital case management system, on June 30. A subsequent investigation discovered that an unauthorized party obtained certain C-Track Canada files associated with three Ontario courts - the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice. "Based on the investigation, a subset of court records were affected, some of which could potentially contain individuals' names and personal information. Certain confidential, redacted or sealed information may have been impacted for certain affected courts," Thomson Reuters wrote in a statement released on September 2. The data breach was also confirmed in a public statement by Ontario's three Chief Justices, who warned it is possible that personal information relating to individuals involved in court proceedings or mentioned in court documents may have been exposed. Alongside the Ontario courts, the C-Track incident has also impacted appellate courts in 11 US states and the US Virgin Islands, West Publishing Corporation, a US-based provider of court management solutions owned by Thomson Reuters, revealed in a separate statement. These states are South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Montana, Tennessee and North Dakota. West Publishing said the affected court records potentially contain individuals' personal records, including names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, medical information, dates of birth and health insurance information. Like with the Ontario courts, certain confidential, redacted or sealed information may have been impacted for certain affected courts. The investigation is ongoing to establish the specific content and types of information breached at each affected court, as well as the number of individuals whose information may have been impacted. Thomson Reuters said there is no evidence that systems used to process financial transactions were impacted by the incident. No details have been provided on how the C-Track records were accessed. However, Thomson Reuters emphasized that the incident was not caused by the courts' networks, systems or data security. There's no evidence that the affected data has been misused for fraud or other purposes to date. Court records in high demand. Court documents are known to be a target for a range of threat actors, including nation-state groups for espionage purposes, malicious actors attempting to disrupt or influence individual cases, and financially motivated cybercriminals using sensitive court data to extort individuals and organizations. In August 2025, the US federal judiciary announced stronger cybersecurity protections for sensitive court documents following "recent escalated cyber-attacks" on its case management system. The statement followed reports that the federal case filing system was breached by threat actors, exposing sensitive court documents in multiple US states. You may also like.
