Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in engineering consulting or hazardous materials.
  • In-depth understanding of building and fire codes including the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC).
  • Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association standards related to hazardous materials such as NFPA 2, 30, 33, 34, 55, 400, and 660.
  • Knowledge of insurance carrier guidelines such as FM Global Datasheets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for developing technical reports, client communications, and presentations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while collaborating across diverse teams and geographies.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% based on project needs.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare or lead the development of hazardous materials compliance documentation for projects involving hazardous materials and operations.
  • Prepare fire and building code analysis for high hazard occupancies, inventory statements, and management plans to meet regulatory or insurance requirements.
  • Conduct fire hazard analyses and compliance evaluations for high-hazard or high-value industrial and manufacturing facilities.
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, and code officials to assess project feasibility and develop conceptual designs for facilities storing or generating chemicals.
  • Partner with fire and life safety system experts to establish design criteria for special hazard protection systems including automatic sprinklers, fire alarms, and special suppression systems.
  • Contribute to the creation and refinement of tools and methodologies to enhance team effectiveness.
  • Provide mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and onboarding support to colleagues and new team members.
  • Engage in business development activities to strengthen client relationships and support strategic business plans.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE/P.Eng.) license.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification.
  • Institute of Safety and Health Management (ISHM) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience in combustible dust hazards including conducting Dust Hazard Analysis and compliance with National Fire Protection Association combustible dust standards.
  • Familiarity with United States federal regulations and standards related to hazardous materials from the Department of Transportation, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Environmental Protection Agency.

Jensen Hughes acquires Safety Management Services to expand energetic materials expertise

Jensen Hughes, a global fire and life safety engineering firm, has acquired Safety Management Services (SMS), a Utah-based specialist in process safety and energetic materials consulting. Financial terms were not disclosed. Founded in 1998, SMS provides process hazard analysis, energetic material testing, facility design for explosives operations, OSHA compliance and risk management services to commercial clients and government agencies including national laboratories. The company also manufactures testing equipment for energetic materials and has completed projects across the US, Europe, the Middle East, India, South Korea and Australia. The acquisition marks Jensen Hughes' second deal in 2025. The company, which operates from over 100 offices globally with 1,800 staff, is backed by middle-market private investment firm Gryphon Investors.
