LX Semicon becomes first South Korean supplier of automotive MCUs to Hyundai and Kia

South Korean chipmaker LX Semicon has begun mass production of its LX61101 automotive microcontroller unit and started supplying it to Hyundai Motor and Kia. The chip monitors motor speed, position, rotation direction, and torque in real time for window safety systems and aerodynamic control systems in vehicles scheduled for production in the second half of 2026. LX Semicon said the LX61101 is the first domestically produced MCU supplied to Hyundai Motor and Kia. The company entered the automakers' supplier selection process in March 2023 and reached mass production after approximately three years of development and quality testing. The move expands LX Semicon's business beyond its core display driver chips into automotive microcontrollers and motor-driver integrated circuits.

Hyundai's Q2 revenue hits record $35.7B but operating profit drops 20.8% on weak sales

Hyundai Motor's Q2 operating profit drops 21% to $2B, missing forecasts

Hyundai Motor reported a 21% decline in second-quarter operating profit to 2.9 trillion won ($1.98 billion), missing analyst forecasts of 3.2 trillion won. The South Korean automaker attributed the drop to weaker vehicle sales, production disruptions, and higher costs, which offset gains from a weaker won. Revenue rose 2% year-on-year to 49.2 trillion won. Hyundai, part of the world's third-largest automaking group alongside affiliate Kia, warned that macroeconomic uncertainty would persist and industry competition would intensify. The results highlight broader challenges facing automakers, including rising energy and raw material costs, alongside supply chain disruptions linked to US tariffs and Middle East conflict. Hyundai shares traded 2% higher following the announcement.

Hyundai, Kia, and GM Korea face strikes over humanoid robots and US tariffs

Korean automakers Hyundai, Kia, and GM Korea are facing unprecedented labour disputes as unions push back against automation plans. Hyundai Motor's union will stage daily two-hour strikes starting Monday at its Ulsan complex, the world's largest single automotive plant. GM Korea workers are refusing overtime and weekend shifts, whilst Kia has completed five negotiation rounds without agreement. The conflict centres on humanoid robot deployment on assembly lines, marking the first major labour confrontation over such technology in automotive manufacturing. Unions are demanding bonuses equal to 30% of recent profits and job security guarantees. The timing is challenging: Hyundai sold a record 4.1 million vehicles in 2025, yet net profit fell 21% to approximately $7.1 billion due to US tariffs. GM Korea, which builds vehicles primarily for export, reportedly absorbed American tariff costs independently rather than sharing them with Detroit headquarters.
