Requirements
  • Successful completion of post-high-school education; a one- or two-year accredited program in EEG Technology, including required clinical affiliation, is preferred.
  • Eligibility to sit for the written examination for formal registration by the American Board of Registration in Electroencephalographic Technology within three years of placement; 1,000 EEG examinations are required.
  • Knowledge of EEG techniques, concepts, and equipment, with the ability to apply this knowledge in a clinical setting and expand it through experience.
  • Knowledge of pathological disorders directly affecting the brain and other medical conditions indirectly causing brain dysfunction.
  • Manual dexterity to measure and place electrodes accurately and manipulate controls on EEG machines.
  • Visual acuity and sustained attention to detect minor differences or abnormalities while scanning a moving graph of changing data for periods of up to two hours.
  • Analytical ability and communication skills to formulate and write concise technical impressions of EEG findings.
  • Interpersonal skills to explain procedures, allay anxiety, and gain the cooperation of very ill patients.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns at each step of the care process.
  • Up to one year of on-the-job training and experience is needed to become familiar with the wide range of EEG procedures; prior experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work in a normal patient-care environment with some exposure to infectious disease and unpleasant patient-care activities, and some exposure to volatile substances such as acetone, ether, and alcohol; safety and infection-control guidelines minimize hazards.
  • Some physical effort is required to cope with patients with behavioral problems who may be combative.
Responsibilities
  • Perform the full range of EEG and evoked potential procedures in various hospital settings, including the operating room, radiology special procedures section, and laboratory.
  • Monitor brain activity of patients under anesthesia and communicate pertinent information to the surgeon during procedures; note artery clamping, post-clamping conditions, and sew-up to observe EEG changes during operating-room tests.
  • Support EEG monitoring when assigned to the special procedures laboratory or operating room, including brain mapping, intraoperative EEG, evoked potential monitoring, and special electrode recordings.
  • Interview patients to obtain relevant medical history, explain and instruct them about procedures, reduce anxiety, and elicit cooperation; abstract additional relevant information from patient charts or medical records.
  • Sterilize electrodes, apply them at predetermined measured positions on patients' heads, and check electrode performance; use precautions to prevent infection when using needle electrodes and exercise judgment in electrode placement when deviating from standard practice to obtain a reading.
  • Calibrate and check the accuracy of EEG and evoked potential apparatus responses and adjust channels as needed; check intravenous and oxygen apparatus for patients receiving therapy and report malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • Select predetermined electrode combinations and special combinations appropriate to each case; obtain and continuously scan recordings, recognize artifacts, and take appropriate action to eliminate them.
  • Use activating procedures such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation to induce and record brain reactions; notify the supervisor when sleep induction is required and obtain recordings.
  • Document actions taken during procedures and clinical manifestations observed during tests, such as the patient's level of alertness or drowsiness.
  • Review and analyze tracings and prepare impressions of findings indicating technical changes that are focal, lateralized, paroxysmal, or artifactual.
  • Perform premature-baby testing at Rhode Island Hospital and Women and Infants Hospital as needed, including patient preparation, head measurement, and electrode placement.
  • Observe eye movements, respiration, and cardiac activity in addition to multichannel EEG recordings, and record changes that explain EEG findings.
  • Perform WADA studies in radiology special procedures.
  • Conduct closed-circuit video recordings, monitor patients at bedside for extended periods, and monitor patients with specialized electrodes.
  • Follow sterilization procedures when placing needle electrodes and provide stimuli that induce visual or auditory reactions.
  • Maintain equipment in clean operating condition, detect instrumental malfunctions, make minor repairs and adjustments, and report the need for major repairs.
  • Conduct long-term bedside monitoring for pediatric and adult patients in pentobarbital coma.
  • Maintain and enhance technical expertise by participating in educational activities, including attending conferences and meetings and reading relevant journals.
  • Perform independently within department policies and procedures and refer specific complex problems requiring policy clarification to a supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in EEG procedures is preferred but not required.
  • Completion of a one- or two-year accredited program in EEG Technology, including required clinical affiliation, is preferred.
