Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Completion of training for a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist or California Specialty (Limited) License is required.
  • At least one year of prior experience and/or Clinical Laboratory Scientist training involving specialized and complex analysis, quality control, calibration, quality control evaluation, inventory control, preventive maintenance, and clinical laboratory quality improvement is required.
  • Organization and time-management skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Well-developed planning, marketing, organizational development, and business skills are required.
  • The ability to work with physicians, staff, and professionals in multiple settings and locations and promote diversity in the workplace is required.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of academic disciplines and issues is required.
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing practices in accordance with Food and Drug Administration, American Association of Blood Banks, and state requirements is required.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, are required.
  • A Clinical Laboratory Scientist credential or limited license from the State of California is required.
  • Los Angeles City Fire Life Safety Training is required; if the card is not held upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Perform manual, semi-automated, and automated biochemical, hematological, microbiological, and/or blood bank analyses on patient specimens while maintaining accuracy, reliability, and productivity.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, unusual, and critical results and take appropriate action according to laboratory policy, including age-related considerations.
  • Use clerical and computer functions to communicate results and perform additional clinical and clerical duties for the department.
  • Ensure results are available within defined turnaround-time guidelines.
  • Communicate and interact with coworkers, institutional guests, and hospital clinical staff.
  • Maintain professional growth and development.
  • Participate in the department's quality assurance program and continuing education sessions.
  • Monitor supply levels, communicate supply needs to the supervisor, and assist with inventory monitoring as assigned.
  • Assist in training personnel.
  • Work independently while organizing and prioritizing responsibilities, and assist others when work is caught up.
  • Follow safety and infection-control guidelines and use required personal protective equipment.
  • Take on new tasks and additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Provide flexibility to cover the laboratory during emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Obtain specimens from designated patients as necessary.
  • Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Apply theoretical and working knowledge of procedures and instrumentation in assigned areas and understand the clinical significance of each test performed.
  • Identify and correct problems that may adversely affect test performance or result reporting.
  • Perform and document calibration, maintenance, and quality control according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of point-of-care experience is preferred.
  • Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Microbiology certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology is preferred.
