About the Job

Requirements

  • Strong data and software skills, including Python or Go and SQL, and the ability to own a data pipeline end to end.
  • Hands-on experience building and tuning observability stacks such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, or Datadog, including managing their cost.
  • Experience operating physical or embedded device fleets at scale and reasoning about hardware failures in the field.
  • Ability to turn messy field telemetry into trends, failure modes, and forecasts.
  • Fluency with databases and data modeling, such as PostgreSQL or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, is a plus.
  • A bias toward building mechanisms rather than doing manual work.

Responsibilities

  • Own the fleet reliability data pipeline end to end, including telemetry aggregation, storage, and instrumentation.
  • Own tooling spend and reduce observability costs by cutting unused services.
  • Instrument the fleet and own the reliability health metrics.
  • Verify that fixes hold fleet-wide, not only on the device that generated an alert.
  • Reduce alert noise at its source by distinguishing real failures from self-resolving ones.
  • Turn recurring failure patterns into automated detection and recovery.
  • Use fleet telemetry to track which cohorts, hardware revisions, and firmware versions are trending toward failure and why.
  • Build failure-mode analysis to inform engineering fixes at the source.
  • Own fleet-wide trend and forecasting work, including power and solar planning.
  • Quantify reliability work in terms of field-trip cost, hardware-return cost, and observability spend, then prioritize the most expensive problems.
  • Set and track fleet reliability targets, including uptime, offline rate, and truck-rolls per sensor-year.
  • Provide the team with data for reliability-versus-cost tradeoffs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Reliability or Site Reliability Engineering fundamentals, including service-level objectives, error budgets, and proof of recovery, applied to a physical fleet.
  • Experience across the hardware-software boundary, including power, connectivity, and physical failure modes.
