Requirements
  • A nationally recognized personal trainer certification, including ACSM, ACE, NASM, AFFA, ISSA, or NSCA.
  • A nationally recognized fitness instructor certification appropriate to the specialty being taught, including ACSM, ACE, NETA, AFFA, or SCW.
  • At least one year of personal training experience.
  • Group fitness instruction experience in the specialty for which the candidate is applying.
  • CPR and automated external defibrillator certification before starting instruction.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, kinesiology, and body mechanics specific to physical activity.
  • Knowledge of hydrodynamics principles in aquatic environments, including buoyancy, resistance, drag, turbulence, inertia, surface tension, hydrostatic pressure, and the effects of body position and equipment, for aquatics instructors.
  • Knowledge of teaching strategies and individual student needs.
  • Knowledge of choreography, cueing technique, music, tempo, rhythm, and safety.
  • Fitness abilities that match or exceed the instructional level of the class.
  • Knowledge of aquatic environments and aquatic center procedures.
  • Knowledge of first aid principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise testing and prescription techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition and United States dietary guidelines within the scope of practice.
  • Knowledge of reviewing general health histories, screening, and appropriate record keeping.
  • Knowledge of exercise correction techniques and teaching appropriate form.
  • Ability to perform exercises and demonstrate them to clients.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures and communicate them effectively.
  • Sales and marketing experience in personal training and programs.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Ability to safely pull, push, lift, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster when required.
Responsibilities
  • Educate and instruct students on exercise and physical fitness principles.
  • Educate and instruct students on hydrodynamics as applied to exercise in aquatic environments.
  • Explain exercise techniques effectively.
  • Design safe and effective exercise routines for all ages and fitness levels.
  • Start and end classes on time, maintain attendance records, return equipment to storage areas, and assist with equipment quality assurance.
  • Remain available to answer student questions and communicate positively and encouragingly.
  • Supervise and monitor exercise participants.
  • Perform fitness assessments, develop exercise prescriptions, and design safe and effective workout programs for diverse populations, including high-risk clients.
  • Provide one-on-one consulting, training, motivation, and exercise-technique instruction.
  • Design and implement incentive, health-promotion, and specialty programs as needed.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with facility operations.
  • Answer client questions and communicate positively and encouragingly.
  • Represent physical fitness, a healthful lifestyle, and the Parks and Recreation department's values professionally.
  • Maintain equipment and help keep records of center needs and maintenance.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Inform the supervisor of opportunities for course development, course improvement, and problems as they arise.
  • Pursue continuing education and self-improvement activities to meet center and community needs.
