Requirements
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development certificate.
  • Minimum 1+ years of related experience in the Transit bus driving field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) and complete a training program.
  • Bus operators must meet hearing and vision requirements.
  • All bus operators must have a passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement on their CDL.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a Passenger and Air Brake endorsement.
  • An acceptable Department of Motor Vehicles record, and liability insurance is required.
  • Employees must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, with strong organizational and computer skills.
  • Use of one’s personal vehicle (or Liberty University vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of a transit bus operator in typical Virginia climate.
Responsibilities
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and basic vehicle maintenance such as checking tires, oil and lights to ensure the vehicle is in good working order.
  • Pick up and drop off passengers at designated locations.
  • Follow a planned route according to a time schedule.
  • Assist passengers with disabilities to get on and off the bus.
  • Obey traffic laws and state and federal transit regulations.
  • Interact with passengers in a professional, courteous and helpful manner.
  • Keep passengers informed of possible delays.
  • Answer questions about schedules, routes and transfer points.
  • Respond calmly and in a timely manner in stressful situations while continuing to operate the bus.
  • Report accidents or other traffic disruptions to a central dispatcher and follow directions when using an alternate route.
  • Dust, wipe and polish windows, doors, handrails and furniture such as desks, bookshelves, etc.
  • Empty office trash cans and recycling bins, sweep, vacuum and mop floors.
  • Perform duties of a Landscape Technician I.
  • Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
  • Work effectively as a team member and support LU’s mission.
  • Be available as Essential Personnel for emergencies, school closings, delays, and events; perform snow removal activities when assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience driving buses on fixed routes is preferred.
  • Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University within the first 12 months after acquiring it.
