Requirements
  • Current EPA Section 608 Technician certification for Universal Refrigerant Handling.
  • Meet standards for operating a State of Wisconsin fleet vehicle.
  • Professional experience in the HVAC trade.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC/R systems, equipment, and related mechanical systems.
  • Experience working on computerized and digital HVAC systems, including direct digital controls.
  • Follow safety requirements and procedures.
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments.
  • Provide customer service.
  • An associate degree from a two-year college or technical school with a certificate in HVAC, or equivalent experience in the maintenance and/or HVAC field.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect, maintain, service, repair, and overhaul campus climate-control systems, including heating, cooling water, steam, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.
  • Perform scheduled preventive and routine maintenance and document activity on equipment and systems.
  • Repair and maintain fans, coils, bearings, air-handling units, pumps, filters, controls, pipes, valves, steam traps, and related equipment.
  • Maintain movable equipment such as window air conditioners, portable vacuum pumps, and departmental equipment.
  • Clean condenser and evaporator tubes; rebuild compressors, heat exchangers, and related equipment in compliance with federal and state refrigerant regulations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including replacing filters, checking bearings, replacing valves and seals, changing oil, and cleaning and flushing coils.
  • Repair, maintain, and rebuild swimming pool equipment and chlorinator pumps.
  • Repair pneumatic controls and monitor, adjust, maintain, and repair HVAC or refrigeration systems.
  • Give direction to maintenance personnel on operation and maintenance of campus steam, water, HVAC, and refrigeration systems.
  • Fabricate, install, and recommend designs for ventilation-system ductwork.
  • Fill chilled-water systems at the beginning of each cooling season and drain them at the end of each cooling season.
  • Test chilled-water and heating-water systems and adjust chemical feed as necessary.
  • Maintain inventories of chemicals used for water treatment.
  • Test swimming-pool water and adjust chemical feed as necessary.
  • Provide input on water-system design or redesign as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair low- and high-pressure campus steam systems.
  • Monitor the computerized maintenance management system and environmental management system for HVAC problems, correct problems indicated by alarms, and adjust system schedules.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace kitchen equipment and maintain and repair laboratory equipment throughout campus.
  • Service, repair, and rebuild building plumbing equipment, including water closets, urinals, showers, faucets, valves, and fittings.
  • Service, repair, and clean building sewer systems, including drains, cleanouts, and garbage disposals.
  • Service and repair building gas and air lines.
  • Work with electricians to repair electrical systems.
  • Make simple welding repairs.
  • Develop and schedule operational work plans for staff occasionally.
  • Receive, prioritize, and respond to service requests according to established timelines and policies.
  • Identify, prioritize, troubleshoot, and escalate system problems, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial, commercial, and multi-building HVAC/R systems.
  • Experience using computers for work tasks, including building management systems and work order systems.
  • Experience maintaining safety and security for oneself and others when working in occupied areas.
  • Experience resolving or mitigating hazards by following appropriate procedures.
