About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in operations, engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related technical field is required.
  • At least 7 years of experience or education in management science and engineering, operations engineering, operations research, industrial engineering, or equivalent quantitative operations work is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in operations, strategy, program management, or technical leadership in a high-rate engineering or software environment is required.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently to SpaceX sites.

Responsibilities

  • Run the Application Software operating cadence with the director and leadership team, including weekly and monthly rhythms, a decision log, and a staffing plan matching company demand to teams.
  • Own the Application Software annual operating plan, including headcount, operating expenses, capital expenses, and vendors, from bottoms-up inputs through Finance review, in-year change control, and comparison of actuals against the plan.
  • Own the mergers and acquisitions playbook and execute integrations, including diligence on people, software, vendors, and data; day-one, 30-day, and 100-day cutovers; decisions on whether to keep, rewrite, or retire systems; and placement of acquired teams.
  • Own Application Software site activation, including the coverage model, local intake and support, hiring, and a go-live plan aligned to the first hardware, first shift, or first customer.
  • Own compute and hardware capacity, including CPU, GPU, and storage forecasts; server-rack layout, power, cooling, and floor space in coordination with IT and facilities.
  • Redesign intake, prioritization, and service-level agreements so work enters Application Software through one process rather than a different path for each team, site, or acquired organization.
  • Address multi-organization problems without an existing playbook, develop a future-looking growth strategy for Application Software across organization, sites, platforms, and compute, and drive it to a decision.
  • Contribute hands-on when needed to unblock plans by writing software, completing integrations, racking and cabling hardware, bringing up server rows, or participating in site and hardware builds until live.
  • Lead a team of 2–3 engineers or analysts, maintain a concise set of metrics, and use them to change behavior.

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in management science and engineering, operations research, industrial engineering, or a similar field is preferred.
  • Track record of owning or substantially contributing to an annual operating plan or annual budget, including headcount, operating expenses, and capital expenses, for a technical organization.
  • Experience forecasting and establishing compute capacity, including servers, GPUs, storage, server racks, power and cooling, hardware bills of materials, and vendor lead times.
  • Experience establishing operations at new sites and/or conducting mergers and acquisitions diligence and post-merger integration for software, IT, or technical teams.
  • Ability to take an undefined, cross-functional problem and produce a durable strategy rather than only a short-term workaround.
  • Ability to contribute directly to software, including scripting, services, internal tools, and integrations, and/or hardware builds, including racks, servers, networking, and site bring-up, rather than only coordinating them.
  • Comfort with ambiguous executive problems and strong quantitative skills using SQL, Excel, Python, and AI; ability to write concise one-page materials for leadership.
  • Ability to influence engineering, recruiting, finance, IT, facilities, and site leadership without formal authority.
  • Willingness to work directly in a rack row, on a factory floor, or with a finance deck as the problem requires.

About the Company

SpaceX

Builds rockets and runs Starlink satellite internet

SpaceX builds and launches reusable rockets and spacecraft for NASA, the military, and companies, and it runs Starlink, a satellite internet service for homes and businesses. In 2020, its Dragon capsule became the first privately built spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. Its Falcon 9 rocket lands its first stage so the booster can fly again, which cuts launch costs, while Starlink beams internet from low-orbit satellites to small dishes for a monthly fee. SpaceX also owns xAI, maker of the Grok chatbot and owner of the social network X, and is building Starship, a fully reusable rocket meant to carry people to the Moon and Mars. Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, and it is based in Starbase, Texas.
